I just received a letter, one of those ones with the adhesive self sealing strip. When I peeled open the strip (in the dark) it gave off a blue glow where the adhesive was separating?

Any ideas on what causes this? Can't see anything in google.. :s

I've had this plenty of times (why I have opened post in the dark, is anyones guess). Not sure on the specific reaction, but have witnessed it a few times.

I've had a few like that. It's amazing! Must be some kind of security addition so you know if your mail has been tampered with.

WTF?!

Pics please!!!

This is rather intriguing

I did try to re-seal it and do it again but it seems it's a tamper proof thing.

There doesn't seem to be any info on the internet for it which makes it even weirder.

I need to know why!

All it was, was a letter saying I'd been offered an interview at a school.

Thanks. That seems to be it;

Materials scientists have not yet arrived at a full understanding of the effect, but the current theory of triboluminescence — based upon crystallographic, spectroscopic, and other experimental evidence — is that upon fracture of asymmetrical materials, charge is separated. When the charges recombine, the electric discharge ionizes the surrounding air, causing a flash of light.

Triboluminescence is an optical phenomenon in which light is generated when material is pulled apart, ripped, scratched, crushed, or rubbed
