Rear wheel drive and snow

Slid a couple of times last night, and not of my own skill, this was turning round a bend and oh ****. Barely made it over really small inclines and tried reversing my car into the drive and using momentum and pdc tried not backing into fence, didnt even reach it, rear wheels spinning leaving the car stuck halfway in the road. Managed after 4 tries.

MX5, Lowered suspension, 195/50/15 Michelin PE2's absolutely useless in even mild snow.

Tried feathering the clutch, 2nd gear, 3rd gear, reverse etc.

I managed to get it into a safe parking space by a friend at work sitting in my boot jumping up and down.

Having the handbrake on a little seemed to help a little but wasn't anywhere near being useful.

Great just snowing again, thought i might take the car out later but will have no chance at this rate. I might SORN it for the next month or 2 and buy a cheap awd.

If it's the 1.8, going by my experience in the snow and ice in one last year it should trundle along happily in 5th at just under 20....you can get it going in 3rd but it's better to basically start at an absolute crawl in 2nd just on the clutch. If that won't work, reverse, forward, reverse, forward etc. Some people advise against engine braking but I found this was the only way I could slow mine down enough to apply the brakes or it would do something totally unpredictable. Having such a heavy clutch (or at least mine did) my left leg would often start spasming after all the clutch control required to get the damn thing up a hill. Oh, and never, ever, ever stop on a hill because I could only get up those diagonally.

Having said all that, if you have any alternative to the MX-5 at all you should take it as I would call it downright dangerous driving one in the snow even driving on eggshells.

I'm rather glad I chucked 75kg of balast in the boot last night :)

I just hope the gearbox won't explode, as I'm changing from W to E and through D-3-L all the time. Fingers crossed..

can't believe it. nice warm luxury 525D and i end up taking a crappy Yaris to work because my roads just too steep :(

MX-5 with cheapo Vredestien Hi-Trac rear tyres wasn't a problem last year and there were a few inclines to tackle.

No added weight, just gentle input to the controls and I think the skinny wheels help a great deal. I think the main disadvantage to RWD is the tyre width compared to small FWD cars. I was also driving the 9-5 estate in the snow and that wasn't as easy as the MX-5 as that had wide enough wheels.

I miss all the snow driving fun this time around :(

Spent another day in the S2000 with no problems what so ever :D Everyone managed 20 years ago with all the crap RWD cars around then. Dunno why so much has changed. Media hype doesn't help with the "OMG you will die if you go outside and drive!"
