GTX 460 or HD 6850/70..

F.T.Ws are around £165, i think is pretty worth it, because i dont think ill overclock the gpu until im a bit more confident at overclocking, also the 10quid or so difference between normal evga, is small and worth it for a slightly better cooler. It seems to be a good card, and then i can always OC it a bit later on, but im going to wait a few weeks before i buy my build and stuff, because a lot of new stuff is coming atm, like new gpus from amd(ati) and nvidia, and also sandy bridge might be bringing down the cost of cpus liek the i5-760 i was gonna get, although £135 isnt bad for a 760 lol.

This is my problem exactly and am 100% going to order tomorrow morn as been looking for a while, was all set on a 6870 but have seen the GTX 460 Super OC here today and am stuck because it seems like great value for money and thinkin going back to Nvidia drivers could be a good thing!!

I'm searching threw reviews and benchmarks now to make my mind up, Guru3d have just reviewd the 460 Super OC an looks good but still comes below 6850's on some games and all 6870's on FPS scores and neither of them are overlcocked so would look to get some good gains.

I'm using my PC through HDTV 1080p do you think the 460 would be good enough for good 60fps 1080p gaming (F1, Dirt 2, Metro 2033, NFS HP at the mo) or an OC'd by myself 6870 be more the ticket?

Cheers, EP.

Sorry for jumping on your thread but seemed daft to start a new one to ask the same question lol

No worries, i too am completely confused atm, and with the 5xx series sure to bring down the prices next month, im not really sure what to do aha. I was going to settle with the ***, but i had seen a lot about high temps and noise, and the Gigabyte you are refering too does look very good value, but like you said some benchmarks do give the ati variannts of competition better results non-oc'ed. It very hard to choose, especially where gtx 470s are coming down a lot now, and also 5850.... Its very hard to choose on what is the best desicion.

Wait 12 days until the 6950 & Gtx 570 are out to see if any prices drop.

If you can't wait & were willing to spend close to £200 on a 6870 anyway, you might as well choose between a 470 & 5870, as both are, on average, faster than a 460 / 6870 when all cards are overclocked.

Yeah strange block dude lol

I was thinking about the prices coming down to but am getting a bit of cash tomorrow and I know I'll blow it over xmas if I wait so still going to order in the morning.

I looked at the 470's but thought maybe noisy and hot but also quite close on limit for my PSU and don't wanna spend any more haha

Been looking since my first post and have decided on a 6870 after reading through some more reviews, was bit worried about tessellation on the ATI cards but seems to be mainly in Heaven benchmark, AVP and Dirt2 etc look good.

Only thing now is which 6870, they are all reference so boils down to brand, I've been Asus for while so not sure about HIS or XFX, XFX are cheaper and free MOH game but want a reliable card for OCing so think one last quick check about reliability of each company and then I'll pick which one!!

Gonna have a quick closer look at 5870's now, think have just been hung up on newer cards!!

Just seen the MSI 6870 Twin Frozr II which is supposed to out in Dec but can only find one link on google shopping which is for here and it's £211.49 but goes to product not available, might ring and order and see when they are due in also.

The 6870 is on par with the 5870 and wins in some and loses in others.

The benchmark thread in this very forum shows that despite the less SP's they are really neck and neck in Performance,

Buying a 5xxx card now is maddness

You mean this thread, all I see is a few 5870 comparsion in heaven, you basing game performance on that lol, go read the reviews, the 5870 is faster than the 6870 which is closer to the 5850.

No raven look again the 6870 beats out the 5870 at stock in lost planet and metro. Those dirt results are a little dubious also as i done 2 runs today at the same settings and averaged 74 fps and 73 fps which is higher than the stock 5870 in that review also. Just done a few runs to see if what was being said about hc being a little biased had any merit to it and found i was getting nearly 10 fps more on my average when comparing to there 6870 score. My 6870 is also stock so was a fair comparison because my machine runs similar to theres.

I never said the 5870 was not faster i told you to look again as you missed the original point saying it was an overclocked 6870 that was faster in those results.

Right I am going for the 6870, mind made up!!

As I've had ASUS last cpl year due to RMA getting newer card out of the 3 on here, apart from XFK being cheapest with free game, any recommendations for the best if there is any as all reference but thinking about manufacturer etc?

I've seen the ASUS for similar price elsewhere which is Direct CU cooling but review I found seemed to say hotter and louder lol

Cheers, EP.

I think they are pretty much all the same card i have a his and am very happy with it. I run the standard fan profile that came with the card and paired with my new haf x 932 gaming case its a very quite machine at load and idle. My hard drive is the noisiest thing in my case atm even when gaming my load temp on the 6870 after a level of cod bo was 57. I got cod mw 2 with mine.

I don't think you can go wrong with any brand tbh look at what the price is and what game comes with it and then make up your mind.

Cool - The XFX is the cheapest and the only one with a game so that's what I was leaning towards anyway, just wanted to make sure they didn't have a bad reputation!!

I'm getting made redundant next year so getting 3DTV out of money and sure can stretch it to another 6870 and PSU for a nice upgrade and try out the 3D stuff to :)

XFX it is then, money in bank in morning an I'll be ordering, cheers, EP.
