Just fired my new rig up, even at stock the Mega+single Viper fan is keeping my i5 at a cool 21 idle (ambient is 19) and 44 prime load...mental!

Can't wait to get overclocking!

It's a brilliant cooler, rarely hit 60c on my cores with Viper fans in games on my i7 920@4ghz(usually around 55-59c.)

Add a 2nd fan. :p

Your temps are very very good too.

Excellent cooler, enabled me to get my Q6600 to 3.6Ghz maxing at 63c.

With stock voltage I would have no qualms about running this cooler passive.

Finally got a proper overclock running, I'm hitting 69/67/66/66 p95 stable with a single fan running at 1250rpm. I want to add my second fan already!

Viper fans are excellent for any heatsink. I got Thermalright IFX-14 with 2 Akasa viper fans and they provide excellent performance at any speed :).

While running IBT, my cpu was happily sitting at 70-74 across all the cores with the fan as 1200rpm. As my mobo is stupid and measures cpu temps via tCase, the tCase temp went above the 50 degrees target, so the fans fired up to 100%.

Core temps all dropped below 60! I was looking at coretemp and Real Temp in disbelief that it was running a very hard stress test at under 60 degrees, though slightly noisy I must say :p

I'm tempted to get one, not because I need it (CM Hyper 212+ is doing a good enough job) but they do look cool and I keep hearing very good things.
Mind you, I'd also like a ThermoLab Baram as I hear they're good too.
Or a TRUE.

The ture has nothing on the Megahalems from what read about it when i was looking to buy a good air cooler.

I used to use a lapped TRUE black on my i7 rig, i replaced it with a Prolimatech super mega, the TRUE actually cooled a little better, with the TRUE being lapped maybe helped a bit, but it has the advantage of being a bit slimmer, therefore it's not as apt to block ram slots.

Very true mate, though when i did run my old q6600, both the cooler, (TRUE) and cpu were lapped, the base of the super mega is very flat, and tbh id be a bit wary of lapping my i7 cpu, tbh temps on the i7 are very good at the minute, max of 65c under p95 load.

This thread has got me thinking about changing my cpu cooler (damn you people!)

As mentioned I currently have the CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ on my i5 750 @ 3.8GHz. Under load, say when encoding video it gets to around 65C (depending on ambient). Now I doubt this is a problem for the chip, but I'd prefer to get it cooler. Mostly cuz cooler is better and I like better.

So would the Thermolab Baram or one of the Prolimatech heatsinks significantly improve my temps?
Which one gives the best performance? Which is best value?
I'm sure I could do a quick Google search to see what review sites think but i'm wondering what normal people find works best for day-to-day operation.

What fans would be best? Akasa Vipers? Gentle Typhoons?

How about the Corsair H70 that on offer for today only on the OcUK Advent Calendar thing. Is that the best option or is it still too expensive even when on offer?

Thanks guys.

If you want a significant improvement, then get the Venomous X. It's leagues ahead of the CM212+, which itself isn't bad at all, and better than the coolers you mentioned. Fan wise, people swear by the Scythe GTs but it's mostly down to preference these days.
