How Much Do You Pay For Your Broadband?

Well, you can only get BT wholesale ADSLmax from that exchange so I would say it's not the best choice to go with TT from there. Sounds like they are fibbing to me, they don't have any kit in your exchange according to samknows.

IIWU, I'd be looking at one of the smaller independent companies like Fast.co.uk or Xilo for a guaranteed lower contention ratio. I've used both of these companies and can vouch for their service as being excellent, although you'll pay a bit extra for it. Having said that it's around what you're paying now.

If you're able to get 7mb at some point then you can't be that far from the exchange?

I thought they was lying to me, I asked are you sure because at the minute I get around 1.5Mb at 7pm ish, he said yes , we cannot lie as our calls are recorded, and yeah the exchange is at the bottom of my street, around 400 meters away, I thought I should be getting a good service but I think it's just down to the service that is available at the exchange TBH, I really don't think BT will be able to sort this out as at midnight it will be fine, maybe where most are in bed and not using the net so I get virtually full speed to my self, will take a look into the ones you have mentioned, thanks

Yeah, the problem you have is congestion in your exchange if you're getting full speeds after midnight.

Changing ISP will probably not fix the issue I'm afraid, but keep on BTs back and I hope they do sort it.

*Edit* - Changing ISP with a low contention ratio stated above may fix your issue.

£20 Plusnet Pro. 20GB a month peak times but unlimited off peak. No throttling or traffic crap. If i want to download loads and im happy to pay for it then alls fair. Get bout 8meg down and 1.3 meg up which is as good as my exchange can provide.

Are you using 100Mb ethernet? I've got a feeling your speeds may increase drastically with GbE.

I got the about the same speed on 100Mb ethernet, switched to GbE and it shot straight to over 650Mb/s.

650Mb/s wtf :O

Surely people constantly download at uni :P

Though it's not like you could even download at 80MB/s is it.. newsgroups? (never used them before, I just know people always get max speeds)

I'm from Sussex Uni, and was getting like 4mbits? What sort of setup do you have there? We have something called resnet that every wired computer on campus connects to.

BT, £24.00 a month, upto 8gb, (supposedly), unlimited, it's dire tbh, my nephew is on BT fibre, a few miles down the road for two quid extra per month.

Another Market 1 sufferer here - £37pm after VAT for up to 8Mb office package with Xilo , with an 80GB daytime cap. To top it off with 50dB attenuation I can only actually actually get 3.5Mb down (tend to run Fastpath though, and only get 2Mb on that after BT's bloody IP Profiles have had their say :/ ).

Office package gets me 832 upload and higher priority though, and I can't fault the service (16ms pings to bbc.co.uk 24/7) Worlds better than my UKOnline service was. There are plenty of cheaper packages around from other ISPs, but they aren't suitable if you want a decent daytime usage cap and low pings / zero packetloss for gaming during the evening.

Is that just for broadband? If it is you are getting shafted big time.

For peeps on a market1 exchange it's the best option though IMO. Going with someone like fast.co.uk is such a better experience than the bigger companies.

We had ADSL with Virgin first and the speeds were dire at the busy times. Trying to call them is so painful I was pulling my hair out, especially as I knew more than them and after they had said 'have you rebooted your PC' for the tenth time!! Companies like Xilo and Fast are staffed by knowledgeable people that do everything they can to help you out and are friendly too. It really is worth the extra dosh IMO.

For example, I just switched from fast's ADSL to Xilo's LLU service. When I contacted Fast to say I wanted to cancel the service they just said 'we're sorry to see you go but can see why you would choose the faster service available and would welcome you back any time'. I would happily go back to them too. Then when the new service was up and running with Xilo, which was so painless to set up it's unreal, I was delighted to find the speeds I'm getting are much higher than they originally quoted. When I contacted them to thank them their response was 'looks like you have a good line, we might be able to tweak that so it's even faster'! They could have so easily just left it at that but no, they're always keen to improve their service. That's the difference that you pay for IMO.
