Good afternoon,

I am considering buying a MrkV Golf GTI with a budget of £9000, but ideally no more than £8500.

What do you think the car would be worth after 3 years?

Any other suggestions for a relatively quick car with a similar level of (perceived?) refinement?

Thanks

05 2.0t a3 perhaps.

Audi S3 only one that stands out, probably cost a few quid more. Maybe a cooper S though i've never heard it described as refined... the rest type r, cupra etc. will be more basic inside. Go with the MKV tbh

Audi S3?

Mk.I of course, to get a Mk.II you're looking at almost double the budget.

[Edit] Bah, beaten by the Bond villain. :(

How is that 'early'? It's one of the last Mk5's ever made.

makes a proper noise :) drives the right amount of wheels and i'd imagine will hold its value better than the gti

Not sure what value there is in what you imagine - if thats a credible suggestion then that car has depreciated from it's list price to just £9k in under 3 years. Yet you think it will have strong residuals?

I suspect it's a scam or that there is something wrong with it, given that trade book price on that car is £14k. It's far, far, far too cheap. Don't people ever bother to think before they post links on here anymore?

Youbcant always go burying your head in the book you know

They are available in abundance within the OPs budget not all are going to be bent or dodgy. They gphave taken a tumble recently for whatever reason but it will certainly hold money better than a gti

Just to add the r32 market is an absolute minefield as per most vw stuff of interest

A clean mk4 r32 will be up for more than a tired mk5 by quite a margin and for some reason anniversary model mk 4s are changing hands for funny funny money ( 1,8t btw) I'd imagine the limited run mk5s will go the same way though if you really are concerned about resale

You seriously think that car is legit? I mean really?

Why sell a car worth £15.5k for £9k?

doh my bad :) saw 2008 read as 2006 :)

still if the OP is going to buy a golf get one with a proper engine

theres quitea few on autotrader atm around the op's budget :)

if you want a more modern car buy mk5 if you want something that some daft oik vw fan boi will give you silly money for in 3 years time buy a late mk4 r32 for extra monies fit oversized wheels and coilovers lower than a snakes belly, this will instantly add £1500-2000 in scene tax

I'd rather have a Focus ST than a Mk5 GTI...will enable you to get a newer car for your money, to my mind it also has a bit more character if a bit more of a lairy/chavvy image.

Focus is a decent cruiser though despite the image, long gearing and torquey delivery, comfortable recaro seats, well equipped in ST guise (although rarety of cars specced with the proper climate control in a car of this calibre is bizarre), a worthy alternative if you can live with the worse fuel economy and the image.

Out of interest, why ?

Because it's... just old? The Mk5 is a more modern car, on a newer platform, with a newer generation engine and a newer, more modern interior. The S3 dates from the end of the last century. A good car, but it's behind the curve compared to the Mk5 GTI.
