Astra VXR

I was talking to a mate the other day about his holiday, conversation drifted onto christmas when suddenly the guy next to him shouts OMG TOPIC OMG DERAILED YOU ARE SUCH A TROLL.

Can people's brains just not cope or something?

I came into work the other day and a workmate was looking at Passat TDIs on AT as he's handing his leased car back and buying something cheap instead for about 3k. He knows I'm interested in cars and asked if I knew much about the Passat. My OcUK influence kicked in and he's now looking at Mondeo 2.0s or 2.5 Zetec-S's

He didnt break down crying or run away screaming, I fail to see why people cant do that online

I once knew 100% that the car I wanted, without a doubt, was a Peugeot 306.

I then bought a Citroen Xantia.

Just because somebody claims they know what they want doesnt mean they really know what they want.

I,m not crying or screaming just think it would have been nice for the O/P to get the advice he was after rather than 5 pages of buy something else..

5 pages of "try everything" not "buy something else"

It's only the defensive vauxhall crowd who are reading it as "buy something else"

To be fair I do think he should buy something else, but this is something he'll realise himself when he's driven more cars than just a Citroen C2 and a Peugeot 207.

I quite openly admit i like vauxhalls i have owned enough of them.. I 100% agree he should try other cars and see which he likes best not arguing that at all just saying it would have been nice if he had been given the advice he was after..

Thats been quite clear, but its also pretty obvious that the predominant message is to keep an open mind and try all the options.

I've refrained from commenting on the VXR as I've never driven one. They might be crap, they might be awesome - I can't say and I'm not willing to regurgitate other people's opinions for the sake of forum popularity. If I was looking at hot hatches, I'd still go and try a VXR just so I knew I had tried everything and made my own mind up

He was. He was also give plenty other advice - its like a BOGOF advice thread.

Feel sorry for the OP... This exact same thing happened in a thread I started a little while ago regarding an Astra. It's impossible to ask for Vauxhall advice here as everyone, especially Fox, will make it quite clear that you are wrong, whatever reasoning you have.

/me watches another 3 pages of thread from in which Fox won't give up arguing and just leave.

or maybe it's because there's no vauxhall that is better than its rivals, and therefore no really solid case for buying one, with the exception of the VXR8, which doesnt have any real rivals.

He's wrong to not be considering all the options. Seriously, all this overdefensive vauxhall crap is about to make me go all hulk rage. Just stop it already

Why is it affecting you enough to be angry? Maybe you need to step away from the keyboard and take a few deep breaths?

Just ignore them

With all due respect, don't you think its a little patronising to be telling someone that they dont actually want the car that the actually want?

You cant apply a single experience of yours to everyone else. Seriously, read your statement again, its ludicrous!!

I cant belive I have just read that someone thinks they know what someone else wants, better than the person who actually wants it.

Perhaps you should be on TV as a rival to Derren Brown, I'm sure he could make someone who was dead set on an Astra change his mind to something as soul destroyingly plain as a Golf.

But ian, earlier in the thread you admitted you had never even driven an Astra VXR, so what valuable contribution can you possibly make to the OP?

Ive driven a few Astras, so at least I can offer an opinion on at least a couple of aspects of the experience.

What can you offer the OP other than sarcastic comments?

He is right though. There are plenty of people who don't really know what the want but say they want x.

He hasn't driven ANY of these cars yet so it's pretty reasonable to assume that he may not really know what the best car to buy is.

Yes, how plain a Golf GTI is in ways the totally exciting Vauxhall Astra isnt.

To be fair, I'm not sure why we are wasting our time engaging you in intelligent discussion given you are the guy posted this thread:

He can offer the advice to try all cars in the range, so that you get a proper opinion on the cars available.
Even try the cars you don't want or might not be able to insure, because then you have the best idea of what feels right before possibly making a mistaken purchase of a car.

Have you read ANY of the thread, or just seen "vauxhall bad" and jumped on your soapbox.

The advice is and always has been to try everything and not dismiss cars until you do. Why do I need to have driven a vxr to try and get that message across?

Ps, its Iain.

Very true. I want an S60 (preferably the R spec) but after researching and scouring the market for the last 4-5mths I'm still no closer to buying one.
So I'm decided but obviously still undecided. Just seeing that picture of Lashout's P6 Rover sent my car want urge lurching off at a tangent, but I'm buggered if I'll spend another year in a car I "like the look of" but no longer enjoy being in. It's bloody depressing.
Hence why I also suggested he test even the stuff he doesn't like the look of, the golf in this instance, so he doesn't make a depressing mistake.
I'm absolutely 100% behind someone buying something they like but if they want advice I'll give it if I feel it's relevant.
