Do footballers deserve the money they get paid?

As long as there is sufficient paying punters to pay the clubs and associated businesses the obscene amount of money that they do then yes, they deserve it. Simple economics at the end of the day.
 
Yes they do. The people who pay them deem them to be worth the salary based on the income they bring to the company, so yes they deserve it.
 
It's nothing to do with deserving - they are paid their market value - dictated by the number of fans who either go to or watch the games.

This is why those stupid Facebook groups saying 'our soldierz should be paid footballer's wages' rile me. These people fail to grasp the difference. Or bother to work out the huge increase in tax that would be required to pay every squaddie £50k a week lol.
 
As some others have pointed out, footballers seem like an obvious target for this type of criticism, the same can be said for many other athletes. For me golf is maybe a worse culprit (with regards to high earnings)

F1 drivers should be paid a flat wage of [say] £30,000/year but given a hefty bonus for every world championship point they score. Then we'd see them actually bothering to try and overtake.
 
I would like to point out that most of the money that F1 drivers make is not from driving but advertising and I think they do deserve the money they get.
 
It depends which angle you look at it from

From the players pov I can see why they want a nice big slice of the takings and I can't blame them, I'd want it too

Golfers make money from winnings and sponsorship. That is completely different to this topic, you see that surely?

Not really a great point when their basic salary still carries several zeros :p. Love to see performance-related pay - would at least make things interesting!

I think Footballers get paid far far too much. People who save lives doctors/surgeons should be on 5k a week imo. Maybe that's an exaggeration. But footballer shouldn't earn the silly amounts of money they do.

The big clubs where players are really earnig lots are all sustainable in debt or profitable.
Not all players in the premiership are paid the really crazy money.
