Why do we need the NSPCC?

Do we not already have government agencies (police & social services) that deal with child abuse, and a court system that can jail people for it?

I have sat in several presentations from the NSPCC at school in my time, and I still have no idea what they actually do other than operate a phone line and occasionally tell people to call the police.

I looked on their website now and they talk about all these things they're doing, but I'm still not sure if there are many circumstances in which I imagine it would be better to call the NSPCC than the police... A counselling service sounds useful, and I suppose social services might be really bad at it, but I would have thought that social services run a counselling service. As such, I avoid donating to the NSPCC as much as possible. They go in my ignore pile along with the British Heart Foundation (have you SEEN the thickness of their booklets! I reckon every presentation from them must use up at least 10 large trees).

Not many situations where YOU would phone them rather than the police.
This is not about you though, its about all those children who are too scared to call the police, just like they are probably to scared to tell the other parent who doesn't know about the abuse.

But they are't too scared to call NSPCC? ....

It's only the 'haters' that actually got the sheep to donate and turned this campaign from a typical Facebook chainmail into something worthwhile, so well done to them. :D

Hahah just seen this on my facebook news feed

If u have changed ur profile pic to a cartoon character then u must remove it now as it's a group of pedophiles asking this as they think they can get more children friend requests, if u don't beleive this then watch the news !!!!
Cue - OMG NO WAIZ gems in response like

"Some people are saying that it's a load of rubbish and they trying to see who's gullible enough to fall for it but I say if u have kids wether it's true or not you are going to remove it anyway, it's not worth the risk, our and other peoples children are worth more than that :-)"
