Johnnytoxic's Winter Weather Motoring Tip

Just do this, problem solved:

What if your face freezes?

I just run my car for 5 minutes before I leave with the blowers on max. Usually everything will melt quite quickly and I can just use the windscreen wipers to get it off. Unfortunately, despite having a Ford, my car missed the heated windscreen by a few months :(

What car do you have? Heated windscreens have been around in Fords for many many years, its likely it missed out because of spec, not age.

Apparently it was added as standard equipment to my model a few months after the car was bought. Or so I'm told! It's a Focus LX, X reg. Very light on equipment, I don't even have ABS; got AC though ;)

Well there are Escorts with heated screens afaik, so I doubt it is because of age, but rather because LX is base spec. Even on the MK2 Focus the LX didn't have a heated windscreen as standard.

Just checked Parkers. They added more equipment to the LX in November 2001, including ABS, the Quickclear windscreen and a CD player. LX is sort of mid range, but most of the earlier Focuses were pretty lacking on equipment and mine unfortunately is one of them :p

Trouble is, the warmer the water the quicker it freezes. As demonstrated by this lovely video :

Unless you can be bothered to carefully poor the water over your car so that it doesnt touch the path, you'll just turn your driveway into an ice rink.

We've got lows of around -6 in our area at the minute, and it never went above freezing today. More ice is the last thing i need.

it's -7 outside and has been for a week or so now.

"so set the alarm and get up earlier to warm and scrape the car"

getting up 15 mins earlier wont kill you :)

Heated front screen, check.
Heated mirrors, check.
Heated washer jets, check.

... Start car, turn on heated screens and 60 seconds later all sorted.

Walk to station.

Get on train.

Relax.

Screw this windscreen deicing malarky, although last night after an hour at the gym (9-10) the rear window was completely frozen and the front wasn't far off. Thank god for Honda sauna heaters!

Some idiot in our street washed his car over the weekend, was like a sodding ice rink in the evening.

Really missing my AC right now, keep ending up with streaks on my screen where i'm having to dry it out like a commoner (with a cloth, that is)
