For the first time ever, I tried to use a 'real' bow tie rather than using a clip one. All I can say, having never been taught how to tie one, is that I now understand why the clip version exists. After wrestling for the better part of an hour and working myself into a psychotic rage, I gave up. It's a magician's trick I tell you! *shakes fist* :p

I did go through a fair few youtube video tutorials but they clearly weren't suitable. Does anyone know of any guide to tying a bow tie that even a small child could follow? I'd quite like to be able to accomplish this impossible task in the future :D

I learnt how to do it last year but have forgotten! I remeber there being a tricky bit that none of the videos manage to portray easily.

Tutorial: "First you do this"
You: "yup, fine"
Tutorial: "Then this"
You: "yeah.. this is quite easily actually"
Tutorial: "Then this. Watch carefully!"
*guy does a backflip through his partially tied bowtie*
You: "*********"

Had a proper laugh out loud at that, that's is EXACTLY what all the youtube videos are like. Amazing :D

i was so annoyed by one of these i once spent about 4 hours getting it down, used youtube videos, im 23 now when i was 18 i wore a clip on and took that in my pocket so at the end of the night i could be the cool kid who had "worn a real bow tie" o dear me.

THey're quite easy when you know the knack. Tie the tie loose with the bow looking good then pull the knot tight from the back, this means that you don't have to worry about lengths.

[edit] tie it around your neck first then pull it down over your collar, it takes up the slack.

lol, well, that's the problem solved then :D

Keep trying and eventually you master it. I used a few youtube videos and the old 'practice on your thigh' trick. I suppose it helped that I used to wear a bow weekly :)

1) Buy a clip-style one to wear at the start of the evening.

2) take a real one with you and stash it in your pocket. When you are at a suitable point in the evening, pop to the gents, remove clip-style one and replace with the real one draped casually round the neck for the late-night casino look.

simple.

After every black tie do I attend I spend about several hours tying my bowtie just so that it's ready for the next event (it clips together at the back, so this work very well)
This is about the only way I can be assured of having a nicely tied bowtie for any formal event I attend without fretting about it just before I need to be ready.

The only downside is that it normally takes very little time before I get drunk enough to untie it and have it dangling, untied around my neck, so all that effort is for such a small amount of time to have it tied.

Remember to screw it up a bit to put some creases in it first. That freshly out of the packet look won't fool anyone. ;)

I've never managed to tie one myself, good to see som many other people suffering too :p

Inspired dude, inspired

Really very easy once you get the knack. For me it was realizing you could give the first bow at lot more umph then you think.
