Just realised I probably saw this today around a similar time to the time quoted in the BBC article.

I presumed it was a firework/rocket but it seemed to be going more at a horizontal angle and there was no bang.

Also, I can't believe how close this thing actually seemed.

Anyone else see it at around 5.30pm yesterday?

:p

There's apparently a huge meteor shower called 'Geminids' due to happen in the next week or so.

I've never seen anything like I did yesterday. There were plenty of other sightings around Manchester and the rest of the country as well.

"It was heading north and it appeared directly in front of me. It was travelling east to west."

Which is it, travelling North or Traveling West

Yes, my wife and I saw it.

It did look like a firework, only coming diagonally down and not up and "sparking".

It also looked really close which suprised me when I read how far up it was.

I also saw this in Cambridge at 5.40 last night. Like others have said it looked a lot like a firework - which was my initial thought - but it carried on travelling long after a firework would normally fizzle out. The front of the meteor was orange and yellow, leading to a very distinctive green tail.

Unlike shooting stars, this thing was going much slower, about the same speed you might expect a plane to fly across the sky. (Funnily enough my second thought was burning plane, i even took my headphones out to listen for a bang). It was also much much bigger than a shooting star, it wasn't quite Hollywood style 'fireball' but it was certainly no 'speck' in the sky.

Very very cool, i thoroughly recommend everyone to be lucky enough to be looking in the right direction when the next one comes along!

I live in South Wales and saw something myself that night, but it was 9.30pm. I popped out, was walking down my street and saw a bright yellow burning ball shaped object streak across the sky, too big for a shooting star and very bright.
