It's 2am on a weekday at a 24 hour ASDA. You are at the checkout line and the only other customer in the whole shop is waiting behind you, and all he has in his trolley is about 20 bags of sugar. Nothing else just sugar. Would that strike you as being suspicious? Not trying to suggest anything but I will add he is dressed in Pakistan/Indian garb with the beard and all that.

Thought maybe he runs an Indian restaurant and they ran out of sugar but what the hell are they cooking that needs 20kg of sugar at 2 am?

Indian sweets have ridiculous amount of sugar in them; maybe he has an indian sweet shop, and his regualr supplier can't deliver...?

He clearly doesn't need the sugar, he sounds sweet enough!

Maybe he fancies the girl at the checkout but is awaiting a reply from an internet forum before he makes a move??

I once bought a gazebo at 2am from Asda. I'm white so I guess you wouldn't suspect me of going off to make bombs under it. Racist.

Chinese/indian get through that qauntity. Sweet currys and desserts. Nothing abnormal at all, work on the checkouts and you get loads of people buying large qaunties of thingd like sugar, eggs and the like.

Maybe from a bakery and they ran out?
That's my first thought.

You can always ask out of curiousity. (With a smile) "Das a lotta sugar!" If it is for legit reasons, the shopper will have no problem giving you a friendly reply.

If it isn't legit, though, I hope you have your bullet-proof coat donned. :D

i often see the woman from my local chinese takeaway at asda buying about 30-40 chickens at a time. i guess the prices they carve this stuff down to must be on a par with catering suppliers/cahs and carry, but with more convenient opening hours

That much sugar could be used for any number of things - and as suggested - his regular supplier may not have come through with the goods.

I once went and bought 10 bags of sugar to make a batch of Liquers. It's also used in large amounts for home brewing and sweet making/cake making etc - just in time for Christmas.....

I wouldn't worry about it. Unless he comes back tomorrow and asks if you sell 2Kg bags of charcoal powder or Potassium Nitrate...Or possibly concentrated Sulpuric or Nitric Acid along with the Glycerine in the Baby/Childrens section.
