Help with a entry gaming machine

I'm looking to put together a gaming pc for my brother, and would like some help so I get the best parts for my money. My budget is between £300 - £400.

It doesn't have to be top end as most of the time he plays most games on consoles. although at the moment he's using my pc to play his games :rolleyes:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Nvidia Geforce 8600 GT

OS is not required

I've had my pc for a few years so I know these parts are probably discontinued but im looking for the 2010 equivalent

You seem to have the Graphics - CPU performance a little unbalanced there.
A dual core can easilly play games on rather high settings, but an 8600GT, you're not going to get much gaming performance out of that, especially on FPS games.

I'd reccomend a dual core CPU and a more powerful GPU, something like a HD4870 looking at your budget for both.

Or change the Athlon II X2 250 to a Athlon II X4 630, and get a 2nd hand GTX260 216/GTX275 or 5770/4890.

Dont invest in DDR2 ram and a DDR2 motherboard these days.

Motherboard - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-025-FC&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1481 yes its a crossfire motherboard which is worthless with a Nvidia GPU, but the price is killer.
