Right, a freind of mine wants to purchase an Iphone 4.

They currently have a Blackberry and they use on average: 500 mins and 800 texts a month, with going on facebook, hotmail and occasionally looking things up on the internet.

I'v just been informed that they wantto skype now as well using the phone, does that change anything?

They have a choice between the two following tarriffs. Which do you think is better?

3 Network

£119 upfront cost

* 900 any network minutes
* 5000 texts
* 5000 Three-to-Three minutes
* 1GB Internet

OR

T mobile

£119 upfront cost

- 600 Mins
-Unlimited texts
-Unlimited Internet

Is a 1GB mobile internet allowance flexible enough for the Iphone 4 with the above usage?

1 GB is more than enough for the 'average' user.

Im hardly using over 80MB in a month myself. Mostly as my iphone is tethering to the wifi at home & work & friends etc etc.

Without wanting to dredge up the Android v iOS debate, why does he want an iPhone4? He'll get more minutes etc for a lot less on other phones that are more powerful.

Has she tried a new Android handset (or even know what Android is)? They're as simple as iOS and there's more choice of phones - the Galaxy S suits girls because it's so light for example. Or the San Francisco is £99 on PayG if she's doesn't want a contract.

Heart set on the Iphone 4 im afraid.

With out being rude can we stick to my original topic.

Will a 1gb internet allowance be flexible enough for a user to use with a *degree of freedom the intenet on the handset?

Skype etc.......

Without being rude, this is what I hate about iPhone users. They want one, but they don't know why, don't have any need for one, and have no idea about the alternatives. Oh well, that's powerful marketing for you.

And yes, but surely that depends on how much she'll use Skype, which only she can decide. If she's sat on it for 5 hours every day then no, no mobile data plan will suffice.

i have an iphone and i love it but there is no way on earth i would get an iphone contract as it a wasteof money get a secondhand iphone and buy a sim cutter and get a contract for a cheap phone
i pay 11.50 a month for 300 minutes and 250 texts plus unlimited internet and also got a sony vivaz free which i sold and nearly paid for my iphone

please dont waste your money !!

with respect, that's part of the appeal of the iphone. Who cares about alternatives? Who wants to evalutate this and that. How many android phones are there? How many versions of android? iphone4 is iphone4. it's a known quantity. And it works really well.

and what do you mean, 'dont have any need for one' that bordering on insulting and lol.

As for the OP, tesco iphone contracts are quite good. 12mths as well so you can reduce to a cheaper tariff if you want, a lot sooner. thatn other networks. I would never go with 3. so if it's between the 2 you posted go with t mobile.

So you don't like choice and want to be told exactly what you should buy, what you should do and what you can't do. That's fair enough. Not going to comment on that really.

How the hell is that insulting? The only specs the OP has given is Skype, Facebook and Hotmail. You can pretty much do all of that on any phone on the market, hence, why an iPhone4? It's like someone wanting a car to pop to the shops in and being recommended an Audi TT.

Thats all fine and dandy. However, she wants an 'Iphone'. Its as much a fashion statement as it is a functional one.

My post was about tarriffs not about Android vs Iphone.

Thanks for pointing out that you can indeed do everything cheaper with an Android device, but she wants an Iphone.

Also I think we all (me included) need to learn to try to stick to the Threads agenda, rather than taking off on tangents.

About skype, t-mobile aren't really the ones to go for if skype is a main requirement. They block the ports for voice and video calling. You can get around it by setting up a static vpn but I don't think that'll be her forte :p

1GB aught to be enough, Skype and normal text/images web browsing are easily accommodated, the only thing to watch out for is Video streaming - That will eat up your allowance in no time. 1GB is roughly 2 hours worth of SD video streaming, or around 4.5 minutes per day.

I'll reiterate that the iPhone represents poor value for money though. If you must have one consider picking up a second hand 3gs (<£250) and going on something like the Sim 600 plan from three - that's a £15 12 month sim only contract with 600 minutes, 1GB internet and 3000 texts.
Bear in mind though that for the same money as that 3gs you could get a current gen android phone like Galaxy S, HTC Desire, or a Motorola Defy (Very rugged, Gorilla Glass Screen + Waterproof! - If the rate that the girls I know break phones at is any indication, a rugged phone will pay for itself in months)

iphone also connects to your home network or wifi hotspot before it uses mobile internet and this avoids cost while at home

They do know why, you just don't understand their reasons why.

To some people the iphone is as much a fashion item, as it is a phone. They don't care about the specs, or whether something else is technically a better phone. they want one, because they see it as the phone to be seen with.

Try convincing a girl that a pair of generic high street shoes are better than a pair of designer ones, because they're made from a better quality of leather, or whatever. It wouldn't matter how many logical reasons you could give as to why the 'generic' ones were better, they'd still want the designer ones, no matter the difference in cost.

I am aware that there are other options, I will try running them by her later today.

Still whether its an Iphone or an Android, the data tarriff issue still stands.

With the above usages as stipulated in the original post, do I go with unlimited data or is 1gb enough.

The problem I can for see, is that at present on a blackberry 1GB is sufficient, however once they get an *Iphone or other device, the usage may increase as they realise the device can do a lot more.

As things stand im going to suggest she goes for the:

T mobile

£119 upfront cost

- 600 Mins
-Unlimited texts
-Unlimited Internet

As it covers the mins she currently uses, and also covers the skype issue with unlimited data. So she can skype away. Which also means she wont be using up her call time other.
