I'm interested in the results of anyone who's taken this leap. Am tempted myself, possibly with a CF setup (as I game at a stupidly high res 2560x....).

Cheers :-)

Yeah but what's are two of those equiv to? Id rather go for the single 6900 card now and then crossfire THAT at some stage in the future. Also, won't I need the extra video RAM to run games at such a high res?

Cheers guys. I'm interested in hearing from users who have already made such an exchange. Was it a worthy swap?

As an aside, will my Corsair PSU cope with two of these beasties?

Upgraded to 2 x 6950s from my 4870x2. Although its not turned up today like it should have, thanks DPD, gits.

I think even a single 6950 oc'd matches the 4870x2, but I wanted to future proof a bit as I dont expect to be buying any more cards for a year or so.

Well my 6970 has arrive and replaced my 4870x2, in some benchmarks it's miles ahead. BFBC2 seems a lot smoother and stable. In my opinion it's a lot cooler and runs quieter When under load. I'd definately say it's a worthy upgrade if your coming from dx10, I plan to crossfire these later myself for an even better system.

Is it noticeably slower on anything?

Hmm, would two 6850s ( 2x £135 = £270 ) be much better than one 6970 ( £279 )?
Is there anywhere to compare these benchmarks?

I've had a quick look but couldn't find anything concrete. However, making rough comparisons as best as I can, I'd say that I reckon a 6970 would edge two 6850's in max frame rates, though in minimum or average frames, I really aren't sure. I guess I'd expect the 6970 to nip that by a whisker, too.

I was hoping anandtech had updated the gpu bench but unsurprisingly, it's too early. :D

Funny, same as me. Up from x 2 4870 to 1 x 6790 and the day delivery wasnt....well...next day. Hope it comes tomorrow so I can play over the weekend.

I was in the same boat what todo since i had a 4870x2 and i was considering two 6950's but i went for a single 6970 and i must say the differance in smoothness without Vsync on is actually quite big.. i can actually see people clear as day on black ops now and before i had a micro stutter on the 4870x2... seems odd i know but now i changed card i can see it clear as day, Loving single GPU again and AVP runs so nice maxed out i might actually play it now.

OW btw the one thing i did notice about the differance on the 6970 over the 4870x2 8AA has allmost no performance hit on games and i must say DX11 on AVP and metro 2033 with more details runs a lot faster then the 4870x2..(allmost double smoothness n response) Like others say the frame rate you won't notice that much but the smoothness on the 6970 shines a lot.

get 2 x 5850 for a little over £250

Indeed, if you're not fussy about tessellation then:

is an amazing offer.
Wow, a 5850 at £125 is great value - when I started looking for a card two months ago they were £200 at ocuk (actually that probably includes p&p).

Still, I'd only recommend it as a budget single card, I wouldn't recommend 2 of them if you were starting from scratch, they don't scale well and there's no upgrade path.

Glad to see the 6970s are working out ok, mine is slowly heading this way.
