Please forgive making a new post but this will get lost in the 6970 thread due to the normal unhelpful bs posters that are roaming at the mo.

Any way has any USERs installed one and found the fan louder the expected or can compare with a 5870 or simlar for me?

Thanks

If it is anything like my 6950 I don't believe it is any louder than my FANLESS 7800GT it replaced. :p

(i.e. 3 120mm fans running at 5v is louder.)

Be Warned..

What happens if you run a game? When we played Just Cause 2 we were able to get the AMD Radeon HD 6970 very hot and extremely loud. In this shot you can see what happened when we fired up GPU-Z after playing Just Cause 2, sat on the menu and then we closed the game again. We hit 97C and the fan went up to 3942RPM or 57% while the game was running. None of the other games got this hot or loud, but when in CrossFire we saw the Radeon HD 6950 hit 95C as well. We felt that this was something that was worth pointing out to our readers.

I have a 6950 and up to now have not really heard the fan 'ramp up' in game. But i have been on the control panel to manually control the fan to see how loud it gets.

My card idles at around 42-44 degrees and the fan is at 25% (1158 rpm) when i move the slider above 35% (1848 rpm) i start to be able to hear the fan. At 50% (2926 rpm) it is wooshing away but not too distracting. At 60% (3573 rpm) it starts to get pretty annoying. At 100% (5835 rpm ) the house begins to shake and the neighbours start knocking at the door as they think a helicopter has crashed through the roof and still has the rotor blades spinning in my living room. :D

Might be a GPU-Z issue. Idling on desktop with only this page minimised and two GPU-Z windows open, one for each card after about 20 seconds one of the cards hits 100% load while the other is fine. This only stops when at least one of the GPU-Z windows is closed.
This dosent happen using a single GPU-Z window or when GPU-Z is off (can hear the fan ramp when it happens)

This is ofcourse using the beta GPU-Z which adds support for the 6900 series.

Above 45% it starts to become unbareable then again i came from a vapor-x cooler which in my view was the best ever made on a card however this was supposed to be the same technology which obviously has been built wrong.

On autofan you can't really hear the fan and it doesn't seem to ramp up unless you hit 90c or more i think.

Top temps i seen at 50% fanspeed gaming have been 70c, at 45% highest was 75c.

It's a great card other than this.

tbh my 5870 profile is the same over 45% is a bit on the loud side so i assume it will be the same if not a tad better on my ears having just 1 card not 2

Going to 6970 from 5870 xfire then Al? Keep us updated on your general thoughts.................if DPD ever turn up!

yes mate i well aware of the performance hit, i just want some lower power and noise....playing the xbox kinect more and more with my son now so time for a pc downgrade :p

IT IS IMMENSELY LOUD. this is compared to a 8800GTX or a 5850. It's silent whilst the fan is at up to 30% but then it starts getting louder and louder - although i haven't tried any games yet
