I cant believe work.....

My boss sent round an email on Wednesday telling us not to come in if there was heavy snow as he didn't want us risking an accident. Of course being a contractor I wasn't paid but that's better than spending hours on the road or some numpty tailgater going into the back of me.

I would not walk 16 miles in this heavy snow (with very low temperatures during the walk back) unless it was an absolute emergency.
 
Seriously though, in the dark walking that distance, if you walk along any unlit routes or whatnot you could very possibly slip, brake an ankle / leg and have some serious difficulty getting help.
 
Everywhere's within walking distance if you have the time.

Maybe you could fashion yourself some makeshift skiis from DVD cases sellotaped together :)

The taxi idea does seem the most sensible though.
 
suprised at some comments in here , 8 miles walking is a long long walk even when its not snowing.

best bet is a taxi or ringing round your friends or family for a lift?
 
I work for sainsbury's re-stocking the shelves & due to finish at 7am. Iv tired calling some local taxi companies but they are engaged, even tho i cant really afford a txi....So i could still have this issue tomorrow.

The snow is really bad around here, plus windy

1: So cycling is a big no no!
2: I have asthma so IF i try & walk it and the cold n wind gets to much...il be ****ed really.

If it was only a couple of miles i would chance it but 8 miles takes the ****!!!

But im on my probation period at work...so if i dont make it, can they really hold it against me??
 
Id like to know what job the OP is doing tonight, the Taxi option is fair and good if you are earning a good nights wage, but if its bar or restaurant work then the taxi fare is gonna push £15-20 easy in these conditions. Maybe more.

Would you wanna pay 20 quid out of a nights 30 quid earnings?

edit : sainsburys I see. A big firm like that should not have such an issue losing one shelf stacker for a night.

exhaust your available options then phone work back and tell them straight if you simply cant make it.

It's a two-way street, my friend. Back in the day employers had loyalty to employees and vice versa.

These days it's all big, impersonal HR departments, and there is absolutely no loyalty between anyone. Your company will screw you over when it can and you almost have a duty to do the same thing back :p

So no, I wouldn't walk eight miles to work unless I was a surgeon or flight controller or something.
 
Get a taxi, or if it is not financially worth it then simply phone in and say you are snowed in and cannot safely get into work and take the hit that way.

Weather happens, and this is why should we save for that rainy (or snowy) day.

Having said that we had several staff who walked in, one lives 5 miles and the other a little further. It didn't take them much longer than in normal conditions.

However, at night in sub zero temperatures no employer should be suggesting you walk 8 miles, they have a duty of care toward you on your way to and from work and thus the manager should consider this in their decision which they clearly have not.

lol, don't potentially risk your life for a shelf stocking job.... unless you really need the money.

Sounds just like Tesco's.

Im not a shelf stacker, but they did send out a manager come pick me up last night after i told them i was stuck and had turn round as it was gridlock, guess what he got stuck & there was no way i was walking to work then walking home.

had a feeling by the managerial reply as i also work for them but not at a supermarket , mate do what you think is best but personally dont walk it , plenty of people at your work place will back you up on this!
 
Walking is just a stupid idea. Taxi will cost a lot so it depends on how much you make + They could be fully booked as id imagine a lot of people will be turning to taxis due to the snow.
 
Just tell them you aren't prepared to do that. You've told us you have health concerns anyway so tell your manager that. I'm sure they will understand.
 
No one in their right mind would walk 16 miles in heavy snow to go to work unless it was life threatening (such as a doctor)... and if they were that essential then their employers would make travel arrangements for them.

If your idiot boss tries anything then you will have a strong health and safety case against him.
 
You're no better thought of than people who don't even consider even trying to get to work in most places, I remember when I was young and foolish, it snowed very heavily, I walked the 4 Miles into work as it was over a foot deep, I was an hour or so late, they docked me 2hrs Pay! People who just phoned in got full pay...Sod that!
 
The problem your manager is faced with, is that a lot of people will use literally any excuse they can think of not to attend work.

When it snowed in the morning recently we had people calling in saying they were stuck on their drives, or would not/could not drive to work.

Why did they not get a shovel and clear the drive? Did they attempe travel later when traffic backlogs had cleared and conditions improve? Sometimes roads are genuinely impassable but the majority of the time people are just crying off with no real justification.
