Considering a car change in March-April next year and looking to spend upto 45k

you know you want too..

Edit - before anyone has a go at me i know it won't be there by the march/april ;) and i think it will cost closer to 50k?

Its not lack of power in the GTR thats the issue, its just the way it drives, its too easy and it also empties your wallet extremely fast whilst at it......

Get the vette, a TVR or an SL55...something a bit hairy. The GT-R is no easier or harder to drive than 95% of modern cars on the road. It's limits are just stratospherically higher. 997 Turbo suffers from the same misconception...it's 4wd and computers do it all for you. You just have to push it harder and that whole "boring" stigma disappears almost as quickly as the road behind you. I'd certainly scrap the TT and the R8 if you want a challenge.

I agree. Age is nothing to do with it, just different cars appeal to different people.

No but age is making me unflexible (is that a word) in my outlook.

Thats why i got to stop arguing on the internet :)

Something a bit different just popped into my head. A Dodge Viper?

I've always bummed these, I suppose the 8.3L part might not go down too well with the current petrol prices but hey, pretty sure it'd be awesome to own.

Left hand drive, that a crash overtaking a bus waiting to happen :)

I've driven and owned just about everything out there as you know Gibbo, so I'll offer my take. My personal cars at the moment speak for themselves and I'm happy with them but let me explain why.

First off, Ferrari 360 - Beautiful, probably the nicest exhaust note in the range but frighteningly expensive to maintain. If you were talking about a 430, I might be tempted to go down this route since they're all chains now and much, much cheaper to service and run. Bills on a Ferrari can ruin you, no joke, we had a 360 that had the gearbox blow 2 days after it was delivered, the bill was a nice 25k. This was a new car so thankfully, not our responsibility but regardless, that kind of money is scary, even when you're dropping 120k on one.

Aston Martin - Between my father and I, we've had the latest AMV8, DB9, DB9 Volante and the previous AMV8. All of them were unreliable, poorly built and basically garage candy. I love the look and sound but honestly as a daily proposition, forget it. They're also not that sporty, regardless of what the desired target audience of the AMV8 is, they're more of an occasion car.

Audi R8 - Lovely, too expensive for what it is, slower than a 997.1 in terms of acceleration, let alone a .2. They're gorgeous, have tremendous presence and a fantastic free maintenance plan but they're priced out of their own league IMO.

GTR - Nissan overproduced the car this year, prices are already starting to freefall in the USA and a lot of enthusiasts are trading them back for Porsche's, Ferrari's and Lamborghini's. Every single person I know who owns one (about 15) is trading now the novelty has worn off. An *Extremely* competent car as Fett will attest but ultimately lacking in soul much like the new 458. Yes you really did just hear me call the 458 boring.

Corvette - Beautiful and rare in the UK, nice lumpy engine but not all that well made, given how expensive they are. Now if we're talking ZR1, I tip my hat because that's one of the few cars I've driven aside from a 996 GT2 that genuinely terrified me!

Porsche - Mark's a big advocate as am I but I hope you see this as objective, since you know me pretty well. I'd stay away from the 997 Turbo at this price point, simply because of the added costs of running them. A normal 997 is still very expensive to run every day but don't suffer the same issues that the T's do. I don't think you'll find a better car to run every day, that you can confidently take out of the garage and put 20k a year on without dreading a huge bill. When I had the 430, I was terrified to take it out because I was afraid of a $5k bill every time I took it out. It's not that I couldn't afford it, it's that I don't want to have to worry about something that should bring so much joy.

Do not be concerned with the whole BS about the rear engine killing you. There's a reason the GT3RS won the Autocar best sports car test, it's an absolutely epic platform.

For me, the shortlist would come down to R8, GTR and C2S. I've seen comparisons where all 3 have won, including straight line drag races. For me personally, the GTR novelty wore off after my 3rd drive and while the R8 still catches my attention, the price is just making it play well above its rank, at that price my money goes to a 997 Turbo or even a Gallardo.

I'm back in the UK quite often, you're more than welcome to come over and have a look/go in the GT3RS, C4S or whatever else we have at the time. I'd offer to take you out now but the snow makes it hard.....

Part of the fun!

I'd spend the money on a Mustang but you've done that, you've done the crazy fast Jap stuff now with the Evo so I'd suggest a Porsche is a suitable side step.

Not much else is going to be as fun as the 'Stang and Evo without costing mega bucks.

In reality I've not driven a Porsche, or an Evo and only a Mustang briefly though - I'd imagine more people in this thread are the same so it'll just be a case of blagging as many test drives as possible and see what fits you best!

Gotta be a 997 turbo at this money. Mark will say the bills it can produce are epic but almost anything you buy at this price can produce bills like this.

The problem is that with the OP's budget your looking at more or less the dregs of the market. That's not a great place to buy any car for, let alone a £45,000 Porsche that was touching nearly £100k a couple of years ago.

Another vote for a 997 C2/4 + some pocket change here.

I'm currently seriously considering a newTTS, but since you've mentioned the Aston...

The Aston is easily the most stunning car out of that list.

See what is "fun" gonna go into one of my had a few rambles now.

Fun to me is doing 30mph down Tesco in the same car that kicks arse when it needs too, its a Porsche all day, i know Fett gonna be on in a minute and say they are boring, but sometimes boring is good.

Boring dont break down much and boring can be driven every day without a suspension reset.
