Hi all,

One of the retards at work found a new iPhone 4 in the street.

He turned it on and it had loads of texts offering a reward if found etc.

But he's said he is keeping it.

Is he breaking any laws by keeping it? Everyone is saying he should hand it back but he is set on keeping it despite hating apple products!

Steal it from him and turn it in for the reward. Once it doesn't turn up it can't be used as a phone in the UK anyway, sicne the owner will get it blocked.

I'm not overly sure but wont it just get blocked in the end if the owner doesnt get it returned, meaning no phone and no reward?

It should be handed in to the Police Station. If it isn't claimed within a certain amount of time he should be able to keep it. This is what happens with money iirc?

A quick google.

What happens to goods handed over to the police

The usual police practice is that you can have the goods back and keep them if they are not claimed within six weeks (six months in Northern Ireland). However, the police may want more time if there are special circumstances and they want to investigate, for example, if they suspect the goods are stolen or think that the owner can be traced. Once the property has been returned to you by the police, the original owner cannot usually then claim the goods.

It is not "finder's keepers"

Finding a £1 coin on the street is finder's keepers, but finding an iPhone knowing it belongs to someone else and that person is identifiable breaks a section in the theft act (I forgot which one).

Ask him why when it'll just get IMEI blocked and be rendered useless. or an expensive ipod touch with lots of broken appz.

Lost goods
If you find goods that appear to be lost, then you can keep the goods as long as:
  • You did not find the goods dishonestly or while trespassing
  • You take care of the goods - you will be liable for any damage caused to the goods while they are in your care
  • You did not find the goods on your employers' property
  • The goods are lost, and not uncollected or abandoned, stolen or treasure
  • You have taken reasonable steps to find the owner of the goods
  • The goods were found not attached to anything on premises or land where the occupier does not exercise much control, for example, an air terminal lounge, public part of a shop, or recreation ground.

your work friend is a ******* tell him hes a bad person and that you hope he can live with the conscience, iphones arnt cheap and its a bad thing hes doing, if he dosent let up, tell the boss, he could get fired. damn this thread made me sad.

Punch the **** in the face and steal it back

or "borrow it" when he's not looking and text the owner who has it and where he can be found...
Film impending mess

Isn't there some clever locator thingy that smart phones can do too, so the owner can physically track the phone?

What's the point in keeping it, as soon as the emi number is banned its literally useless exact as i snazzy ipod touch.
You cannot hack the emi number on new iphones, in fact its been very very difficult since the iphone 3gs.
