If you're talking about the UK then the most recent EuroStat Eurobarometer poll had 38% of the UK believing in a god. As to what percentage believe in it the way an Abrahamistic or similar religion pictures it is outside of the scope of that survey. It does put you in a minority though.

As for "mobilised atheists" I'm certainly not one. I don't feel a need to gather or sign up or join something to vocally object where appropriate.

Edit: There's a difference between Santa and God? What would this difference be? Please say that one's real and one isn't :)

The same poll that states that in the UK 78% of people believe in a God or some form of spirit or life-force...., the same one where only 20% stated NO belief in God...

btw, this was a survey of only 600 people in the UK.

A more concise and relevant survey, that of the latest (sept2010 480,000 respondents) IHS Survey by the ONS (the proposed replacement for the Census) states a different picture...

So the latest ONS figures put you in a pretty small minority as 71% of the UK stated they were or were affliated with Christianity.

Ah the sweet irony in
There's a small but significant portion of the population who refuse to join the 21st Century
Little did he know he was only talking about himself

Yes, atheists are in the minority. Most people that say they are atheists (myself included) are saying that but meaning agnostic. I don't say agnostic because that is interpreted as meaning that I believe in some sort of divine being but I don't really know much about it.

I don't quite agree with that definition but we may well have been over this before - I know I've had the debate with others on here. Agnosticism is simply not taking a position on an untestable hypothesis - I've never been aware of it as a belief in a divine being but the person not being sure enough about it to state their beliefs. Atheism is the explicit or implicit disavowal of god(s) but it's also a position of faith because you're making a definitive statement about something where there isn't a way to back this up.

Right. That's why I say I'm an atheist but I know that I could be defined not to be. I do not have any faith one way or the other.

You do not need to attend church to hold a belief in God.

It's the other way around. I'm quite sure if someone believes in the god of the old and new testaments then they're physically unable to go to church, or they're going to church. It would be an act of incredible stupidity to choose not to go to church if you believe in all the stuff about afterlife etc.

In fact it would be the same as skiving off a job interview - because that's what the bible says life is.

Anyway, this arguement is never going to get settled. I don't believe it's right to indoctrinate children. You don't believe children are being indoctrinated. It's more or less academic as far as your son is concerned because he's seen through it, and my family won't be subjected to it either.

It's incredibly foolish to believe that the bible states a specific need to go to church because it does not.

You haven't even read the Bible yet you make unfounded judgements on it.

Telling people (or your children) that something is 'rubbish' and they shouldn't listen to it, and insisting that other people shouldn't have to be 'subjected to it', isn't indoctrination ?

I have read the bible. I was forced to as a kid.

It's a shame you didn't learn some of the more tolerance related lessons from it then.

Was this at school that they FORCED you to read the bible....

were you FORCED in the same way as you were FORCED to read Lord of the Flies or Shakespeare.....

I don't remember which people I'm supposed to stone.... is it adulterers or homosexuals?

You do know that the Old Testament is superceded by the New Testament....also no school/bible class teaches Leviticus or Deuteronomy as anything other than allegorical or as a product of its time.

Besides, if it were literal then as an unbeliever, you would be the target....

To be fair yes I did know that the new testament was basically a reboot of the franchise and that jeebus said let he is without sin cast the first stone. I've given up on reason and I'm just trolling now for giggles.
