Hey ladies

My domain name is up for renewal at £10 for 1 year. Seems kinda steep. Am i able to just transfer it to a new host? Presumably I can re-register it with someone else using an introductory offer?

Currently its with the same company that hosts my site. Better to keep them together or meh?

Is it a .com? If so, £10 sounds about right.

If it's a .co.uk then that is a bit steep.

You could transfer it no problems, when it's with the new registrar you'll just need to make sure the nameservers point to your web host.

some hosts will let you transfer for free, then renew at a better rate/cost.
I personally used tsohost, but a few others offer same service

it'll be worth transfering it now even if it saves a couple of quid as then you'll be saving the rest of the time you keep renewing it. vidahost is who i use and afaik they will transfer for free but could be wrong as it's not something i've ever done before

UK domains are an instant + free tag change to the new registrar's tag - nice and easy provided your current host don't charge to do the tag change.

Not really hassle, just get the IPSTAG changed, then the new registrar can update the nameservers (if required). Hell of a lot less hassle then other domain types.

So I emailed my current host/registrar QIQ, just saying "I really appreciate your customer service etc but £9.95 is a little steep for a .co.uk address, and whilst i'm happy to renew my hosting with you i'm going to need to consider moving my domain elsewhere. Could you point me towards the knowledgebase entry that shows me where to adjust my IPSTags?" (i couldnt find them anywhere!).

Anyway a few hours later (even though they're closed for Christmas) I get an email from the managing director asking what price would retain my custom.

I'll let you know how it works out :P

Honestly, QiQ give incredible customer service. The MD seems to respond to all queries personally (its not the first time i've heard from him) and they're always doing as much as they can to help out.

OK, update:

I am a complete clown. The £9.95 renewal was for 2 years, not 1, making the price actually very reasonable. Peter sent me a breakdown of the cost of buying domains at Nominet and QiQ are actually making very little profit from it... although he offered to lower the price to £7.95 for two years regardless.

Moral of the story, QiQ are awesome, and I am a tool.
