Well, turns out that my mum has finally decided that it is time to upgrade from her old Yaris

Her new car? ...
A brand new VW Polo ... now they are decent cars, won "can of the year" too afaik ... but not when you take the 1.2L 3cyl version making an awesome 60ps

And probably not when you buy it on PCP

I guess that makes your Mum a total idiot and a failure in life?

Best to let people get on with it, she's not a car enthusiast, leave her alone.

We cant save people who are simply not interested

This.

Most people are convinced they know best when it comes to car, even if they don't.

Just don't get involved. That way you don't get frustrated when they spend £10,000 on a car because they liked the wheels or something.

Her reasoning is that she doesn't drive enough to get anything else and wants the new car every 2.5 years deal that VW PCP thing gives

Only reason she doesn't drive that much is because she always makes my dad drive in his car when they go somewhere together :/

It can go both ways, my mum bought a 370bhp bmw when a 1.2L 3cyl polo would have been perfect.

May I enquire to what her electronic mail address is good sir?

Rypt, although this choice is what we all rabbit on about in here a lot of the time there is nothing logic and experience can do. Let her get on with it.

Xx

Yes, but 60PS for gods sake :/
I know of shopping trolleys that have more umpf than that

It weights more than my MR2 and has less than half the power ... and I think that MY car is way underpowered

On a related note, this morning I got stuck behind some typical blonde bimbo in a 1.2 51 corsa going 15-20 in a 30, kept going very close to the curb and slowed down even more for roundabouts and corners.

Probably still drunk from the night before and had an itchy **** affecting her steering.

I find that engine suprisingly good around town. Sure it's slow - but it's quite torquey and doesn't feel so terrible unless you try and push it - which I assume your mum doesn't intend to do. They're underpowered on the motorway - although saying that once you get them up to speed they can comfortably keep up with the flow of traffic.

They're also amazingly frugal driven by the right person. The missus has a fabia with this engine, I get around 45mpg driving it - but she regularly gets 55-60mpg driving it to work and back (30min drive on an assortment of 30-60mph roads)
It may well suit your mum perfectly - reliable, cheap to run and good around town - so I wouldn't be too hard on her!

Just refer to it as "Poverty spec". I actually managed to get a girl I know out of buying the cheapest new 1.2 Corsa there is (on PCP) by continually saying it was "poverty spec".

Am I right in thinking that the PS 1.2 Polo doesn't even have electric windows and remote central locking?

It does, it has all the nice aircon etc stuff - my mum wouldn't buy something without AC lol

It's not quite poverty spec, it's the Moda A/C or w/e spec

It even has iPod connectivity, despite neither my dad nor my mum having an iPod lol

If she hardly drives, and only drives around town, why does she need a new car every 2.5 years?

A 10 year old Micra would do. Zero depreciation and no wasted money on leasing or tick.

The other half went round a sharp left hand bend the other day and the car juddered and the oil light came on.

Convo went

Her "Why did the car do that?"
Me "Well when did you last have it serviced?"
Her "Dunno"
*sigh*

Women, know your limits.
