The End Is In Sight For The PS3

We might only be a few days in, but this is definitely a candidate for "overreaction thread of the year", along with many of the replies.

Although what concerns me more is the people that seem to think that the PS3 being hacked is somehow a good thing.

I'm on the fence with this.

I hate that it means hacks will be available for most games and it may lead to the same issues the 360 has had.

On the plus though its another console that I may be able to run Sonic 3 and knuckles and Zillion on so every cloud and all that i guess :p

The keys to the xbox360 were found ages ago, and on-line is full of hackers. But still the xbox continues to sell well.

No, the master encryption keys to the 360 have not been found. The JTAG hack on the xbox 360 is nothing like this, and that hole was closed by MS two dash updates ago anyway. Also, JTAG modded xboxes are banned from live within minutes of connection. Live is not 'full of hackers' at all.

They will most likely have to follow MS and permanently ban from PSN anybody who is using a modified console.

You don't seem to understand, the PS3 will not need to be modified to run unsigned code because the hackers have the master encryption keys. This means anyone can sign code and it'll run on a completely unmodified PS3 because it will appear as genuine Sony signed code.

End of the PS3? Of course not, the vast majority of Joe Public will not know or care about this news, and will carry on just the same.

If it becomes 'simple' enough for people to get games working on the PS3 I can see a lot of people doing it (just look at the DS and the R4 cards). And going by what I've read so far it might as well just be drag, drop and install.

As said before all this means that game devs will use the EA way off using a code to unlock MP games and may even have something for locking out SP games. So this will affect the used games and maybe rental markets as well as dirty pirates. Just think all these " I want a PS3 for homebrew" people will infact make it worse for legitmate gamers hope they feel happy.

Yes... but it has been hacked for many years, and still going stronger than the PSP which ironically is abit more difficult to hack.

Where did I say the DS was a failure? What I was getting at is that it's simple to do and just about every person I've come across with a DS has one.

Didnt say you said it was a failure.
The previous guy who you were responding to stated that Joe public would not care about this. But the reason why Joe public would care about this, is (obviously) for pirating purposes, and as you can see, the title of the thread is "the end of the PS3 is in sight" implying that piracy can be the root cause of the demise of a console.

But I was stating that it is not necessarily the case.

I'm not familar with how the xbox is hacked so forgive me.

But all that will happen is that Sony Release an updated version with new hardware that does things differently.

As peoples old PS3s fail and die etc.. the number of old PS3s around that can play copied games goes down.

It will be a never ending game of cat and mouse, even if they cant stop the people with old PS3s running copied games.

DS is a case in point, another game of constant cat and mouse that never ends.

Which surely has to use the same encryption keys to retain backward compatibility with all PS3 games and software released?

I think Sony have a lot of thinking to do.

But any new PS3 will still need to use the compromised master key to play games that require the old master key, unless they create a PS3 that only plays games with a new master key which wont happen.

I may hold off buying a WDTV Live now, Maybe the PS3 will be able to act as a proper media centre with an XBMC port :D.

People need to stop seeing this as an xbox type mod/hack which results in a 'cat and mouse' type game.

Hopefully it will completely destroy the PS3 online and gamers will have to actually start thinking about what they are doing to their system in future.

No one cares when they are getting free games but when it totally breaks those games and systems then maybe they will start to take some responsibility for their actions.

I suppose this could be a blessing in disguise yes.

But on the flip side Sony have been losing money for years now and the PS3 has been one of their biggest losses. Do you believe they'll continue after this? If their online system is utterly decimated by hacks i for one will not bother using it any more.

agreed

I have no idea of what modifications they can make

I'll bet they'll be paying their techs double time to come up with a way to do it however.

With access to the metldr key the hackers will be able to sign any home brew software they want to allow it to run on the PS3, I would imagine this would include game hacks, after all games are update-able and allow patching these days, all it would require would the key, which can now be decrypted on anything the PS3 currently has.

Next will be the custom firmwares which hopefully Sony can detect (unless they can spoof it as being signed?) followed by loaders and eventually hacks or custom game patches (which could spell disaster tbh)
