If China or Russia become militarily stronger than the west

I doubt they could. Millions of people and lots of tech is all very well but unless they have the training to use it efficiently and effectively then I think we'd still come out better off :)

'Apparantly' the F22 has air frame issues that mean they won't be able to use them for long and they haven't made many anyway.

The Typhoon is not stealthy enough, it will be shot down before it sees a threat.

The Chinese and Russian jets (it is said) are stealthier, fly higher for longer and can go faster for longer.

What happens if Chinese threat detection capability becomes or is better than the wests technology?

What rot. :p

There are regular "competitions" between various nations planes and Pilots and in those things the Typhoon is only just behind the F22 (think 4:5 or 3:4 ratio of kills/killed). Considering the cost of the F22 there really isn't much in it so your suggestion that they would just be shot out of the sky is incorrect unless there are vastly superior aircraft to the F22 about to come out.

Anyway it is a damn sight cheaper to build and train a typhoon and pilot than one F22 so there really isn't much worry (money would run out way before people with the ability to be trained to fly a fighter jet for example. :D

The russian stealth fighter will be a poor knock-off, just like Koncordski was, I also bet they give it some poor name such as Stealthski.

If there was an real risk of Sino-Russian superiority then there would simply be another Arms Race.

As has been proven time and again authoritarianism/communism cannot compete with the West when the pressures on.

Just playing devils advocate but Vietnam War was lost by the West, Korea is still divided...

If the red army had decided to invade Western Europe back in the day then assuming it hadn't gone nuclear already then all that would likely remain of the British Army would be some stay behind OPs in West Germany.

I do completely agree that over time it has been shown that Western Style democracies work better but China is certainly getting stronger and I wouldn't be surprised if it did get to a stage within a decade or two where China could retake Taiwan with the US effectively having to step aside and not get involved. Then again I could see one big large China perhaps not existing within a couple of decades having split up...

As far as the OP is concerned I doubt China/Russia will be looking to threaten the West directly even if they do catch up technologically - far too much mutual trade at stake especially between US and China.

Firstly, I would say that the Typhoon is considerably better than the F-35. In fact I have seen nothing but negative things about the F-35 and think that people just assume its amazing because it looks like the F-22 and is mostly American made. Is it even finished yet? Just seems like a hugely expensive mess to me.

That aside, I would also say that there is no chance of Russia becoming more powerful than the west any time soon. Never mind reach a point where they could actually pose any kind of real threat.

admitedly dodgey article but there are others

The article uses a lot of "possibly" "allegedly" "if true" etc. Also it only focuses on flight capabilities which frankly mean little if the weapons and targeting are not up to scratch. If your enemy has a stand off range of 100km then all the dogfighting ability in the world will do you little good.

The perfect example of why people can't be trusted with nuclear weapons, add to that the fact that there are NO reasonable circumstances in which any sane person would actually even consider using them.
Forgive me, but I rebutted your point. Your comment doesn't follow from that.

Not that I entirely disagree with your subsequent point - but I offered two examples of when a nuclear armed state attacked a non-nuclear armed state with nuclear weapons in recent history.

Just stumbled across some interesting stuff about Chinese and Russian stealth fighters with the potential to be superior in operation to the F35 let alone Typhoon.

Potential is one thing actual is another. The Russians have always produced great planes and whilst they have not always had complete technological supremacy they have always looked the sexiest.

How would you feel if the technolgical balance swung clearly the way of the Chinese and the Russians?

Different countries put forward differing defence strategies from top down - for example Britain relies on naval assets etc to secure what are the relevant defence conditions for their own particular need. Russia is not really so fussed in such an area and its doctrine has been based around large scale centralised mechanised actions since the early 1940's. To achieve this it has some of the best armour and close air support ever designed eg T-34 and SU-35. So they have had the technological balance in the areas that concern them.

Would you feel secure in such a situation?

Wouldn't lose sleep - do not see a large scale land campaign being fought for quite some time if ever again.

Do you think that once the Chinese catch up (overtake?) the west, the west will be able to hold it's own?

We have been in the lead technologically before but in the main they have throughout history - our primacy is the unusual event.

Apparently India are a technology partner with Russia.

They are a technology partner with a great many countries what they do get from Russia though is complete access something which even we do not get with the US.

Personally not worried, Russia is a bear that only comes out if you really annoy it and China relies to much on the west to export and buy it's goods. Russia wouldn't risk a nuclear war with the west because they would fear we would destroy them in due return and China wouldn't want a war.

More worried about North Korea TBO.
