With sandy bridge now so close I am finally getting myself a new gaming computer =D

This is what I currently have planned
build-1.jpg

As for the CPU i want to get the i5 2500k though I can't decide on what motherboard to get. I am thinking about the Asus P8P67 PRO though I have a friend who says I shouldn't go for asus and should get a gigabyte instead, I really don't know.

I am really unsure about is the ram. I was told that the current I series CPUs break if you use something over 1.65v though I am not sure if that is true for sandy bridge.

Does this spec look ok? My budget is about £1000 though I can go a little over that.

Edit: updated the build

You could save your self some money with the GPU by either crossfiring ATI 6850's which would outperform the 570 i believe. theres also the ATI 6950 and i have no idea what it means but you can flash it into a 6970 which is the 570 equivalent. If thats not for you then you can just buy a 6970 which still comes out cheaper :D

Agree with above
Change HDD to F3
If you want to go NVidia and want to keep SLi open in future youre gonna need a bigger PSU, Id look at 1000W, they pull around 850 and its best to have a bit of headroom, however if you do swap to ATi then 750 is fine as they are lower power
The RAM will be fine, but there may be new offerings on this front too so wait n see
Asus and gigabyte are both excellent, it just depends which BIOS you prefer normally, though Ive heard Asus boards will definitely have the new UEFI BIOS as opposed to old legacy BIOS (this means it will boot much faster) but this hasnt been confirmed for gigabyte yet
On the gfx side, a 6950 is pretty much the sweet spot atm imo, the flashing it to a 6970 thing basically turns it into a 6970 by rewriting the instructions it uses, theres a thread in the gfx forum dedicated to this

Rest of the spec looks ok, but I would change the hard disc to the Samsung F3 1TB.

will it make much of a difference that the samsung is SATA-II and the WD is SATA-III?

tbh i don't like the idea of flashing the 6950, just a personal thing =/ scared i will break it lol or it will cause some problem later on.

i was tempted by the 6970 but i keep hearing such horror stories about the ATI drivers =/ also the prices with OcUK are about the same now between the 6970 and 570. i doubt i will bother with SLI/Crossfire at least not for a few years.

The Samsung will be as fast as the WD drive, mechanical drives can't saturate SATA II speeds let alone 3.

hmm ok thanks =) saved me a bit of cash, seems pointless to even make them really if thats the case lol.

just thought of a few more things i would like to ask ^^

1) is it worth the extra to get the Corsair H70 over the H50?

2) are Asus graphics cards any good? thinking if the Asus 570 is in stock when i buy i may get that as it has a higher core speed and is cheaper, sorry if this is a dumb question only built one computer in the past so as far as brands go i only really have experience with EVGA.

3) thinking of getting a Bluray drive, is the Samsung SH-B123L any good or is the LG BH10LS30 worth the extra cost?

4) is there anything important i am missing? already have monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers

1) imo no, in fact tbh Id just stick with a Titan Fenrir
2) yeah asus are fine, think with EVGA you pay for the warranty, 10yrs vs 2/3 iirc
3) the LG writes blu rays, the Samsung reads blu rays and writes DVDs, so its upto you if you think youll need to write blu rays or not
4) No you got it covered, OS? I assume you got, as I say if you want to keep SLi open for future and youre sticking with NVidia Id up the PSU to 1KW though

Looking through OcUK all the 1000w PSUs are almost £200 except the odd antec ones which are out of stock. is there any particular one you would recommend?

looking at other threads it seems the asus p67 pro will be about £150 and the i5 2500k will be about £170 i may have just enough to get a more expensive PSU.

thanks a lot everyone for all the help =D

Does anyone know if the ram I have picked will be ok with the i5 2500k?

I was told the current i5 will break if you use ram over 1.65v and that it may be lower for sandy bridge.

You will need to check what the motherboard you decide to use supports and what is on their memory compatibility list. Also I would advise going for an ASUS motherboard I find in my personal experience they last longer then other brands and support some very nice overclocking features.

Nice system just wondering why you would want to go SLI or Crossfire..? and have to spend more money on a better PSU if you decide to SLI, I would rather put that money into the most powerful single card you can afford. Also may save you headaches which come with SLI or Crossfire setups like heat and some games not liking to use dual card setups. I know some of you will now say it's not a big problem now is SLI or crossfire but lets get real does average gamer notice 100+ frames to 200 frames+ and later down the line as the cards get older ATI or Nvidia starts supporting it less in driver updates in SLI or Crossfire mode ? Always go for the best single card you can afford in my book and there wont be a game it won't max out and be playable. I would also get this power supply if you are good at cable management, it's a great power supply for the money and 950W.

Also what resolution are you planning to use for gaming ?. If its no higher then 1920 x 1200.. don't waste your money on SLI or Crossfire get the best single card you can afford and use the rest of the money on improving or adding other things to your system like nice 5.1 speakers or a nice sound card, you will that way enjoy the pc more.
