1st car

What terrible suggestions - they are both absolutely ancient! A 12 or 14 year old car just because it has 'low mileage'?!

Not just low mileage as a sole factor, but cheap price. Please fox, now that you have finished criticizing, please provide us with your amazing suggestion.

Those tests were performed when the car was new, do you think the Polo will react identically after fourteen years? Both cars are as 'dangerous' as each other, getting an ancient car doesn't help things.

Also both of those Polos are deadly slow, surely a bit of overtaking power is safer if Mr Tractor driver decides he wants to out drag you with you on the wrong side of the road ;)

I stand by my suggestion, you get a newer and better equipped car for the same money, one with a good engine.

1500 quid for a 12/13 year old car is not cheap. I sold a 11 year old Escort for £400. The only reason the 6n Polo is so much is because its a VW and people get moist about German build quality and perceived reliability.

German built lasts. Probably the fiesta's airbag would fail to inflate

Thanks for proving my above point. I'd rather trust a 9 year old airbag over a 14 year old one but I suspect both would inflate and you are just being silly now.

Yes, I am. But the roof of the fiesta. Come on. It's almost scrunched up! Lets hope that there are no back seat passengers

Perceived reliability? Proof is in the pud really. People know they're reliable because they've experienced their reliability.

Sadly as excellent as the Corsa SXi is, you probably wont get a nice example for this budget.

Haha. :p My friend actually got a very tidy three door version for £1800 here.

EDIT: If you do go for a yaris, at least go for the 1.3, the 1.0 will bore her to death.

Wanna give me 1500 and I'll go stick that 14 year old Polo through a wall and see how good it comes out the other side. Reliability is not a 14 year old Polo nor is a 14 year old anything the pinnacle of reliability.

Whilst the benefit of your wealth of experience is huge, I doubt a girl buying her first car is going to be 'bored' any less by a 1.3. It's a car, it looks cute and goes from A to B and puts shopping in the boot.

I don't know, depends how she is like. She might be a little into her cars? The 1.3 is much better and the insurance isn't that much over the 1.0L plus you can find them relatively cheap under the £2k budget.

Anyone 'into' cars isn't going to be excited by a Harris unless it has a big turbo bolted to it and does 0-60 faster than a Veyron.

I don't even have a car, let alone £1500 to buy one! :D

Also, I never stated it would come out in one piece. Of course it would be written off, I'm thinking more about safety of the passengers. Also, as I said before, it's not going to be THAT safe, but the tests showed the Polo to be safer than the Fiesta. Before you mention its age again I'll mention this here so we don't go round in a circle again.

She'll just be happy to be driving, never mind what car she is driving.

Exactly, that's what I was getting at.

Oh well that explains it then, here's me thinking you had a wealth of 6n Polo knowledge ready to put me in my place but you don't own a car. Damn. Also both cars have the same ncap rating therefore they are deemed to be more or less as safe.

Wow, that's pretty stupid to think that when you suggest a car, it automatically means that you know it inside out :o I don't own a car but I'm currently driving a 2L Passat B6

I was getting 41mpg from my Yaris TS. Also its quite cheap to insure. I did a quote on a 306 Dturbo when I had my Yaris and guess what. The 306 was £200 more a year than the Yaris even though at the time the Yaris was a group 7 and the 306 was a group 5.
The Yaris is cheap to insure for what it is due to insurance companies think what most people think. Its a Yaris and must be driven either by old people or women.

You can get T sports for less than £2000 nowadays. A 1.3 might be cheaper on petrol but 41mpg when driven fast and slow is pretty good in my eyes.
I did a trip from Bradford to Blackburn and back roughly 80 miles and I was getting about 50mpg even at 70mph and more
My friend in the car couldnt believe how little petrol the car used. I use to get about about 10 miles for every £1 I put in (104.9p at the time) on long journeys.

All Im saying is dont rule out the Yaris like most people. Its a good car and is a very good 1st car.
