Yet another fail thread... replacement cheapskate car!

Madness mate, which is why more cars seem to be getting scrapped.
I know you're not a mad 'fanboi' like me, but I'm sure you'll agree it's not bad enough to be lost to the scrapheap in the sky yet. :)

Right, got a little list together of things that are starting to annoy me / broken. :)

- SRS light on. Fixed - needed resetting as battery was flat for a few weeks.
- ABS light on. Used 'paperclip method' to get fault code, needs new ABS sensor for NSF, got one ordered for £5.
- Vibration through steering wheel at speed. Will get wheels balanced, and go from there. Possible ball joint / bush.
- Stereo not working through driver's front door speaker. Fixed - connector was loose in door.
- Heated mirrors intermittent. Fixed - switch cleaner applied to switch in door card.
- Central locking misbehaving. Fixed - Unplugged locking ECU, WD40'd connectors, reconnected. Working fine, keyfobs working too. Bonus!
- Air con not working. Fixed - sensor on receiver drier had corroded connector. Cleaned up, working fine, and icy cold. :)
- Rear passenger side window not working. Fixed - popped door card off, greased up motor and mech, working beautifully. Also greased up all window runners, all much better.
- Cam cover leaking oil. Will be re-sealing with Instant Gasket when I can be bothered. :p
- Exhaust downpipe blowing. New one ordered, old stock on eBay for £30.

Grand total... about £35. Win. :p

On the plus, the brakes have now freed up properly, and they don't half stop it well. :D
Also washed it, and apart from a few imperfections it doesn't half clean up nice.

Sometimes.

The T-Series HG failure isn't a cheap fix (unless you can do it yourself), but incredibly frustrating.

Diff and input bearings are also common and not a cheap fix.

Crank case pressurising on older, worn engines that wouldn't be a problem really, except for flooding the ECU with oil, because they decided the map sensor and a vacuum line to the ECU was a good idea.

All of these are only really an issue as they've aged/done a lot of mileage though.

It's the later engine, so head gasket is the Klinger from the factory. No worries there.

The gearbox bearings are a worry, but I have a set here and it can be done over a lazy weekend with a few ciders, I'd probably swap the clutch while I'm in there as this one feels like it's near the end of it's life. There's no gearbox whine, and the diff bearings feel nice and tight from a casual tug of the driveshaft.

Something like this is true ***** prestige, you can run one for sod all if you have a good source of 2nd hand parts.

:)

I've owned four cars with PG1 gearboxes and every one has had input shaft of diff bearing problems :(

Driving it like a loon! ;)

Don't take kindly to being ragged in 1st or run low on oil, tends to knacker them.

Didn't have problems with any of mine!

I've seriously lost count of how many times you've bought, sold and re-bought various Rover 400 and 600 series cars. Can we have a quick run-down please? :p

£180 isn't too bad for that, I suppose.

You 'suppose'? Do me a favour, that's an absolute steal. Take off your cliche rover hatred hat for a second, and remind yourself that you drive...a Mazda.

No, you're absolutely right. I'd much rather have a Rover 620ti than a 1.4 Golf :)

And you drive a 1.4 Golf. Jog on.

Edit: Oh and as for the Rover..I still don't like them, but as has been said, for £180 you really can't complain at all, whole lot of car for the money.

reminds me of the parking situation on matchdays at my house in Burnley. Nice find for the price.

Match day, or when the chippy is open ;) :p

Nowt wrong with a Mazda and there's nowt wrong with a Rover. You buy, own and run what you're happy with. That's why some people seem happy when driving a Matiz or similar.

200bhp, £180, £35 for small repairs and turning up to work in the car you wanted. Can't argue with that.

3 months?

For £180, drive from Plymouth to London with 3 passenger and you are laughing, almost broken even in 1 trip!
