Tell me about f10 and e60 520

Is it? I see your gain as being the same car only a bit newer with the advantage of a warranty for a bit. It's still an E60.

What exactly is wrong with your car that cannot be fixed?

It can be fixed, but at what cost and can I trust it again? If I did end up with another E60, I would want one with low mileage so that I can perform 50k oil changes on the box as it should be, not this "sealed for life" rubbish BMW insist on.

Why don't you like the ZF autobox? It's one of the best out there. Apart from a few software issues I've not seen one thread with problems with them.

ZF as a company make fantastic gearboxes. The one on my old E39 had some serious abuse and was smoother than a silkworms codpiece. However, the autobox used in the E60/Jaguar/Bentley/Land Rover is a well known weak point and there are myriad posts and complaints about how nobody is doing anything about the issues which affect these gearboxes. Issues that start as simple lurching etc to losing drive and slipping after "only" 40k miles in some cases.

Type 6HP26 problems into google and you will see what I mean. There are even websites set up, dedicated to the problems that owners have experienced.

The thing that puzzles me with this thread is the OP & his current car.

Unless I have things wrong (as if?) :D his autobox is dead and he wants to part ex the car with the dead 'box.

Surely this is the wrong move?

I wonder why he does not source a replacement 'box from the likes of FAB Direct, get the car fixed, run it for 6 more months or so & then chop it in against an f10?

The gearboxes in these cars are not the issue, imo, its more the "sealed for life" aspect of the servicing, BMW seem to think gearbox oil lasts forever....

Thats pretty much the size of it.

I really don't want to put my trust in a recon box in case that too has the same problem, which seems likely. I would be chucking good money after bad.

It makes a lot of sense what you are saying though.

Whats the value of your current car faulty & fixed.

I can't see a replacement (secondhand) 'box costing more than the difference tbh.

And I'm fairly sure FAB & the like will give some sort of warranty on the 'box, but I would advise you check this first!!

I see the chucking good money after bed aspect of your dilema, that said, chopping it in as effectively a non-driver is surely pouring money down the drain?

The gearboxes are hit & miss I think, whilst its done double the miles of my old e38's identical box, the one in my current e39 is performing just fine.*

* I'll regret that statement! :o:D

I just looked at googled "6HP26 problems" out of all the manufacturuers that use this gearbox only Jag and LR/RR seem to have huge problem. It points to me its more their implimentation rather than gearbox weakness. Theres over 20 different premium cars fitted with the gearbox 99% of the google results are for the above manufacturers. The only problems Ive seen mentioned on BMW forums are for trans slam which seems resolved with later software.

Whats gone wrong with you gearbox anyway out of interest?

My gearbox is stuck in limp home mode and has disabled reverse gear. When it wasn't bringing up an error message, it appeared to slip when pulling away from standstill.

BMW have told me that its 2 clutches within the box that have worn away and to replace just those its £2900. That sounds a bit much doesn't it?

That makes a £1500* fitted second hand one a bargain (which tbh it isn't really) but £2900? Thats a joke!

*Ball park.

Anyone know a trans specialist in/near Swansea?

With a view to fixing the existing transmission?

I think a recon / second hand 'box is a better option, and should not be beyond the scope of a competent garage.

I suppose it depends which is the cheapest option.

I can probably get a box from the bay for £600, the problem comes when you have to code it to the car.

Which is why I suggested somebody like FAB Direct, I'd imagine they would have experience of this, or at least be aware of it & hopefully be able to either direct you to a suitable specialist to fit it & code it, or help with the code itself....

Have you contacted them?

Not as yet. I'm in work, using the internet on the sly :D

I would like to take it to a transmission specialist first to get their opinion as I don't trust BMW now seeing as a whole recon gearbox from another dealer is £1500.
