Android - Slightly Hyped IMO

Have to say I feel slightly disappointed with my HTC Desire. Feel as if I should have opted for an iphone but not too bothered.

I do not agree, Desire HD is smooth as a baby's bottom... Sounds like the person who piped up was me I think :P

I don't really notice any problems, phone is stable with uptime in the weeks and everything pretty much just works. Whereabouts to you get this judder and slowdown?

I definitely think Gingerbread is a fairly large improvement, I've been running an alpha version on my ancient HTC Magic for almost a week now and compared to Froyo it's amazingly fast,

I have issues due to tiny amount of RAM so semi-frequently it needs to load stuff into ram/kill off processes which makes it lag but when it's not doing that it is very quick and smooth, and obviously the Magic has barely any RAM compared to the decent phones.

The other problem is the SenseUI is slower than stock android, albeit being the quickest of the manufacturer ui's, might be worth trying launcherpro/adw which should work fine without being rooted?

how is it overhyped? theres hardly any hype at all for it....if any thing apples marketing projects unworthy hype like no tomorrow (facetime anyone?)

as i always say iv had 3 iphones then a desire and cant imagine going back to the ios mess.
recently got an ipad and reminded me how dumb and stupid (and also it too suffers from lag) the apple os is.

I don't think Android is hyped at all

That's a good point, there's hardly any hype that I've noticed so if OP thinks it's hyped then he really must dislike it quite severely.

My iPhone 4 using brother-in-law had never even heard of Android and didn't know that Google had anything to do with phones.

Yep over hyped.
customisation is rubbish, how many people actually want to install new roms just to make a phone work. How many people actually want to customise a phone. A tiny portion. Most people idea of customisation is installing a weather app or something.

Apps are extremely buggy as they have no tests or restrictions.
he phones are buggy and clogged up, They should not allow custom roms and they should limit hardware comparability.

So so many downsides and the only up side is you can get cheap phones unlike Apple/W7P

However saying that it's pretty good, it does what you want, once you've faffed about and installed a custom rom.

Not really, I think iOS suites mobile devices perfectly. What do you find is messy/dumb/stupid about it?

Facetime is actually implemented very well, much better than any previous attempts at "video calling" (which never took off).

Seriously, that is rubbish. Just to make it work? My DHD works great and guess what, I have widgets.

yep remove orange branding, make it play mp3s with out skipping, some Android phones may be fine others aren't. Because they allow custom roms and don't restrict hardware. Two massive failure points, along with apps, that constantly crash and seem to have no screening. where apple must do at least some basic screening, as I never had that problem on iphone.

But with all that fiddling all you have is some pretty little new screens and widgets and the same old boring apps and phone. Horses for courses, a tiny minority (mobile nerds) want to fiddle and the vast majority are happy with what they have.

My DHD is silky smooth. Judders/Slow downs were fixed with last update (before that you had to turn on USB debugging to fix a bug where INIT would peg at 99% CPU).

DHD out the box is a nice experience, SenseUI is very pleasing - much better than Vanilla Android (IMO). I haven't felt the need to do any custom roms etc..

Who says the filddling is compulsory? You can use it like an iPhone if you wish, there is no requirement to fiddle only the option.

Granted not all Android phones are equal but then neither are all iPhones. I was only referring to the DHD as that's the one the OP refers to.

It's a tough one, after using the HD for a few days now I do miss my BB, which in turn made me miss iPhone also....

Sounds like a simple case of getting used to the OS/hardware.

The first few weeks of using Android was the same for me (coming from iOS)
Using iOS now feels incredibly clunky and slow (one button etc) but I'm sure after a few weeks I'll get used to it again...

Well i moved from a BB 8900 Curve to a Desire Bravo & I'm happy with the switch. For me the larger screen is a must now as my eyes can't cope with a small screen. As for typing i turn my Desire sideways & the keyboard is the perfect size for speedy typing, I have big hands.
I haven't experienced any lag & am quite happy to browse forums & post using it. So all in all the Desire has been a step up in every way. I now use my moby like a mini lappy & the larger size screen & keys to type make it a pleasure to use rather than a fiddly pain. The pinch zoom feature works brilliantly as well all in all I'm well happy.

facetime hasnt taken off lol, what you really think that apple calling it facetime and restricting to wifi is a revelation? thats the only reason its implemented better! watch it crumble on a network.

its too simple, the keyboard is horrid, simple operations are actually much harder on ios then android. the amount of times me and the mrs have slammed down the ipad bc of ios is pretty much every night. it might be more stable than android but its massively behind the times.
