I'm taking the Mrs on hols this year, preferably to the Caribbean.

Problem is, I have no idea which of the many islands to choose. We're both 28, would prefer to avoid 18-30's style shenanigans, and would probably get bored sitting on a beach for 10 days straight so some places to explore and go hiking/biking would be nice.

Have any of you guys been? Got about £3k to play with.

Look at Cuba - I had one of the best holidays ever there. I've been to a few other Caribbean islands but in terms of things to do, see and culturually diverse and interesting, Cuba is hard to beat. Certainly for hiking and biking. The only other islands I know are Antigua and St Martin.

Here's the thread I made on my Cuba experience:

i will second Cuba a amazing island and amazing people
had one of the best holidays of my life there, and i so want to go back

Cuba or Dominican, plenty of things to do and great beaches for when you want to laze

To be honest I never even considered Cuba! Looks great from FF's thread though.

I'd sort of discounted Jamaica as it seems a bit 'obvious' and from many of the pics I've seen looks a bit like a generic Spanish holiday resort. I was being drawn towards St Lucia or Antigua, but there's just too many to choose from!

We went to the Dominican Republic last year and loved it! Superb place with some truly stunning beaches etc, on the other hand there is a hell of a lot of peverty which makes you feel bad for being so indulgent lol, then you drink lots of rum and these thigns no longer enter your head haha.

Cuba.

Been there myself, great tourist attractions, the sea is just crystal clear and warm and well its the bigger country with less crime than many others.

Yeah DR is like a 3rd world country in some places, just be careful where you go, no different to the rest of the Caribbean really :p

If you can, spend a little bit more and go to The Maldives.
I've been to Jamaica, Tobago & St Lucia and would only recommend the latter 2 really but not above the 2 Islands I've enjoyed similar holidays on in The Maldives, awesome place :)

I've been to the Dominican. I can't but help think there has to be better?

From what I've heard St Lucia is beautiful. Think that may be my next stop when I go back to that part of the world.

I can share the experience that I have and what I've heard:

Antigua - Not been, but I've heard that it's not quite as nice as some of the islands from folks who have been to others.

St. Lucia - Lovely island and there is plenty to do, inland and on the sea.

Barbados - This is a very British island, with many expats and everybody speaks good English... it's obviously a very wealthy island and also consequently very safe to go anywhere and has many exquisite restaurants and such. Try 'The Cliff' if you can, amazing!

Jamaica - Pretty much the opposite of Barbados, it's generally regarded that you have to be a lot more careful, especially when leaving the hotel and they recommenced avoiding places like Kingston. You can still have a fantastic holiday in a resort... though even in a secured resort, we still had items stolen from our balcony and rented bikes nicked too.

During the day there are some fantastic tours you can go on. Night however, we mostly ate at resort restaurants and the few times we did go out were on organized kind of trips to restaurant/experiences... like say a Sugar Plantation Restaurant.

In essence they are all very different.
