2x HIS HD 6950

Somethings not right, these are pretty powerfull cards im begining to wonder if they need more than a cpu at 3ghz to run in xfire, it will be intresting if anyone else have these in xfire with a q6600

Not at the same res and no aa but here is my 5870 Crossfire result.

I'm wondering if you CPU is holding you back, 3Ghz overclock isn't that quick especial on old Core 2 technology. The other issue (which I think is the reason) is your motherboard 'P45'. P45 was never that great at Crossfire, it's not the lack of PCI-E lanes but something to do with the chipset your not the only person to have this problem poor Crossfire performance and P45 (run some google search’s on Crossfire P45 results).

Im sure his motherboard is the x38 chipset, ive tried googling to find some info on theses cards with a q6600 but cant find any

Yeah it's an x38 motherboard.

Luckily enough one of my house-mates has an i7 and an Asus Rampage 2/3 motherboard. I am going to test the cards in his rig and see how it goes. Although looking at his case I will be doing well to get one card in let alone two.

Should get a chance to do it in the next day or two.

Let us know how you get on, if they perform ok then you could always try clocking your q6600 a bit higher

Will do, I'm installing Crysis at the moment. After that, I'll push her up to 3.3GHz and see how it gets on in Crysis and Black Ops. Should be fun seeing how it handles Crysis :)

Ok, I tried OC'ing the CPU to 3.6GHz :) It was having none of that. It seems stable at 3.3GHz. No performance gains.

I downloaded the Crysis updates and I'm getting ~15-20 FPS on 1680x1050, 8x AA and all graphic details at "High". The in-game Crysis optimal setting chose "High" for me when I clicked that too..

Before I bought this card I was reading about the flashing to 6970 and the benchmarks versus the GTX570 etc. I never actually noticed the FPS in the benchmarking games like Crysis, Dirt2, Civilisation 5, whatever..

Just looking at these reviews now. One reputable site benchmarked a 6970 in Black Ops with the following settings:
1,680 x 1,050 4x AA 16xAF, DirectX 9, Maximum Detail

They got a minimum of 83FPS and a maximum of 110FPS.

I won't get a chance to try the cards in a new machine until Tuesday at the earliest. Is this worth a reflash with a different vendor's BIOS?

that things messed up as hell. it has to be a bottleneck.

There's a big bottleneck on top of my shoulders after the last few days with these cards :D

OH lol thats probably the problem.

I ran Heaven with no AF and 4x AA and got better results, as you would expect:

6970 flashed, 880 1375
FPS: 50.6
Scores: 1275
Min FPS: 27.5
Max FPS: 136.0

But these are worse results than my original benchmark with the 6950's (not flashed) i.e. stock :(

ok ignore the last comment. its still messed up.

tell you what makes it more wierd.

i have 2 5850s in Xfire and i get arround 700 on 1 card. and 1309 at stock on the 2 cards.
and your max fps is higher mine gets to about 109-119.

are you sure this benchmark isnt telling you porkys? it just seems wierd that you would get better results at 8aa

also i got the same problem. the 5850 was being ignored by the CCC one of them was displaying as 0% activity dispite this i still noticed 90% increase.

also another thing i noticed what was your last card? tell us about that.

did you overclock it by anychance? with msi afterburner?
i noticed that for somer reason with my 5850s which overclocked rubbish. for me, i noticed undoing the overclocks i couldnt get the same performan ec at stock. oddly enough i restored back before i had MSI afterburner and played with it and it worked fine.

clicked the defaults on CCC? for some reason they never returned the same for me again.

****ing in the wind really but id thought id throw a few things on my mind from my personal experience.

seany84 you could try overclocking the q6600 with less ram because i was just rememerd that when i first had my q6600 i was on xp and 2gb ram and i could run at 3.6ghz but as soon as i installed vista 64 and added another 4gb of ram i could only get 3ghz oc, im no expert on overclocking but im sure you can get a higher overclock with only 2 sticks of ram and if your useing 4 x 2gig sticks this will still leave you 4gig in the system which will be enough for you to test with

yep your right this basically puts more stress and therefore it can't reach as high.
