Cheap car oil

What grade?
I just seen part synthetc 10W40 and 15W40, not sure if they sell the otheres or not mate.

You could easily write what I know about cars on the back of a stamp, but, isn't 4 litres a bit stingy given that most engines require more than that amount?

Good price anyway.
No. Most small cars take around 3/4litres when empty (doing an oil change for example) and they get topped up every 3/4 weeks or so, so 1 or 2 bottles would be ideal.
They usually RRP at ~£20 each.

Its always best to top-up with the exact same oil that is in the engine due to additive packages etc, but second best would be using the same grade.
Best bet would be to contact the garage that serviced it and ask what tehy put in.

frakker, you can mix different brands safely. You can even mix different grades reasonably safely.

eg if your car needs 10w30 and you notice its a bit low and all you can get is 5W30 then dropping a pint or two of that in won't harm.

One thing people forget is API spec which is marked on the bottle and in your car's service specification. If your car requires API SL oil then I would never recommend running an oil less than an SL spec. Unless the alternative is to run no oil at all... Usually you are fine to take a higher spec than your car requires... but if you have a real oldschool car which has OHV (not OHC) and the motor is recently rebuilt then you can have accelerated cam lobe wear by not having an oil with sufficient zinc (ZTT I think) in it This is common on API SL and above as they zinc is removed to improve catalytic converter lifespan. I think SM has no zinc at all.

Exactly, Tescos is currently £16 a bottle, Halfords the same. Unless you buy it from ebay or when its on extra special in Tesco then this is a good price. It doesn't even look like its on offer, seems to be the Asda price.

What cars take less than 4L ?

Needing top ups every month would worry me too!

Yes, it absolutely is - it's the cheapest readily available retail price if its true. The next cheapest is Morrisons at £11.99, and it's £15-£20 everywhere else.

So it is, never realised it was that much. I get it from the cash and carry for £32 for 4l

Generally depends on engine size surely.

I used to have a 1.3 which with a 5l can would have plenty spare for top ups. My current 2.4 takes somewhere between 5-6 litres.
