Hi im looking to buy a new cpu cooler for my i5 2500k setup. I will be overclocking but not heavily (around 4 - 4.4ghz)

What can you guys suggest, mainly it needs to be quiet and affordable but still cope with overclocking.

Any help appreciated, thanks.
 
Hmmmm wasn't too bad , Did mine out of the case (motherboard removed) all you have to do is turn your MB upside down and place it on the frio, not too hard. And if your case has access to the MB back plate then even easier I would say.

Yer not to tricky just different.
 
I was just looking to ask the same question, although £40 seems like a lot of money for a CPU cooler? Would a H50 not be a better bet at just £10 more?
 
H50 can be loud - do a search a few people have had problems with it.

I thought these Sandy Bridge chips were so chilled that you could OC them using the stock cooler without problems?

Look at it as an investment much like a PSU , they need to be good enough to power all of you system and allow headroom for overclocking.

A 20-30 cooler would suffice but you would get no headroom, then you'll be frustrated end up shelving the cheapo cooler and shelling out for a better one.

Wait that extra week, payday or whatever and invest in a decent cooler.

Like I said in my last reply look at it as an investment. And no the extra 10er on an H50 is not better I have just changed from an H50 to the Frio and the Frio outperforms it by 10 degrees + on maxi overclock, the H50 just couldn't cope and thats with 2 2000rpm fans.

Noctua D14 is top of the class, if you can afford it, if not I think the Frio on price / performane is well worth £40.
 
Given that people are hitting max voltage before hitting any temperature issues with SB, the previous post does not ring true to me.

It is not a case of not having the money, it is a case of not wanting to spend more than I have to. I think I may end up with the Artic 13.

I've ordered my SB setup based on days of researching, reading people's experiences and reviews. I've offered my insight already which is information widely available on this very forum - People are getting into "dangerous" voltages before they are having issues with heat.

I'm not saying something like the Frio is pointless, if you want to spend that much money on air cooling then that is your prerogative, I just do not agree that a super-expensive cooler is essential, as you suggest.

My post was not made with the intention to rile you, so I apologise if it has, it is just another perspective.

Not at all,

No I have the bigger picture of the point your getting accross thats fine. I too have been reading up on SB it looks like a great platform.

I wasn't say it was essential to have an expensive cooler, Just that if your to OC then get the best you can afford , Invest. While it might not be essential for SB, well that could be the case.

But if your into OC'ing I personally think that overlooking your cooler could bite you in the a$$.

There are other coolers out there including the very good Corsair H50/70 (water) and A50/70 (air) coolers. I have also use the artic freezer 7 Pro rev 2 on 3 PC builds that i completed, which is again a good cooler for the money.

But as Cool breeze states if you want to overclock your system to perform well and keep nice low temps, then a quality cooler should be used.

In a recent group cooler test the FRIO came top, and that was for LGA 1156 1366 and AM2 socket sets, i dont think much will change with regards to LGA 1155

I have built 2 i5 750 systems using the FRIO as the cooler, both systems were stable @ 4.0Ghz, i will be using the FRIO for my upcoming SB build.

Hence why i love my FRIO :D

OK.

If you are building a new system from scratch then its easy to mount. However if you are replacing a cooler with the FRIO, then i suppose it can be a pain, as you would have to remove the mobo from the case. As this is the only way you can mount it, or like cool breeze stated you can take the panel of your case off, and access the rear of your mobo.

The thing i liked about the FRIO compared say to the Freezer Pro Rev 2 (which is also a very good cooler for the money) is you know the FRIO is very secure, as you have to screw it to a back plate through the mobo.

It took me about 15 mins to fit.

Only 1 thing i didnt like, like i said, was the instruction leaflet was pants LOL

The packageing is very compact, plus i have used only 1 fan, and used the other fan in my case LOL

Temps wise my i5 750 system has peaked @ 59 Degrees @ 4.0Ghz, idle temps are around 30 degrees.
