Hi i'm 18 turning 19 in a few months and i'm thinking of buying my 1st car i had in mind a mk 4 golf due to it being german and they are the best built cars i was just wondering would insurance be a lot for me i have a provisional and the car will be a 1.4, or would anyone reccomend another car that they personally used for there 1st car?

Whatever car you get be prepared to pay at least a ridiculous amount for insurance.
I'd guess you be looking at £2,000+ for insurance on a golf as a new driver, as a friend of mine who hasn't passed her test yet
is paying £1,700 on a Rover 25 & she is 26 years old.

German is not always the best.

VW's hold a massive price premium over other cars because people like yourself think they are amazing - when usually they are no better than other brands.

I'd look at a Ford Fiesta 1.25, Focus 1.6, Fiat Punto 1.2 or a Skoda Fabia 1.2.

Agreed, and from my experience of an older Golf 1.4 it was flat as a fart. As is the Fabia 1.2, its a 3cyl and quite a big bodied car for such an engine.

That said, nothing will be a rocket-ship, try looking at less likely options such as a Yaris, or Starlet - or a Micra, and do some insurance quotes on them.

Generally speaking, Japanese small cars are pretty reliable.

I'm a lousy choice to ask about first car. Mercedes C Class :p

My first was a 1.4 Golf SE (MK III) I paid £1700 my first year (fully comp, don't go 3rd party because it's cheaper) it halved after my first year. There are of course many factors in the price but I also passed when I was 19.

The first thing you need to decide is your budget.

How much do you want to pay for the car? Don't spend a lot on your first car, £1000-£1500 can get you a very respectable first car.

How much are you willing to shell out on insurance? Your first years insurance is usually very expensive. It all depends on your post code, the car you're trying to insure and other variables. Try and pay your insurance out right rather than monthly. When you pay monthly you're in fact taking out a loan with a high APR rate. You'll usually save a couple of hundred quid paying it off all at once.

Next I would go to an insurance comparison website to get some quotes. Keep all other variables the same but change the car each time. Whichever cars returns the cheapest insurance quotes can make your short list. You can then pick the one you prefer. Try the following cars to start off with:

Ford Fiesta 1.25
Ford Focus 1.6
Ford KA 1.3
Mondeo 1.8
Seat Ibiza 1.2
Skoda Fabia
Peugeot 306 D
VW Polo
Renault Clio
Nissan Micra

To keep insurance quotes down try adding your parents as NAMED drivers (Don't put your parent(s) as the main driver of your car when in fact you are, this is known as fronting and your insurer can refuse to shell out IF they find out.) Also add any experienced ladeee drivers in your family as named drivers :).

The trick with insurance is to think outside the box. Most young drivers go for the same car, Vauxhall Corsa for example. Insurance companies do this:
Young male + Vauxhall corsa = History shows young drivers in Corsa's claim a lot, higher insurance premium
Young male + Skoda Fabia = History shows young drivers in Fabia's don't make as many claims, lower insurance premium

The above isn't gospel, but it usually works. A larger engined car does not necessarily mean more expensive insurance :).

True, I had one as a courtesy car and did an 80 mile journey in it fine though.

Infact it was a 53 plate iirc and was miles better as a car than the 07 Clio they first gave me - which was terrible.

As soon as I saw that in the OP, my face lit up. Preparing for epic thread... :D

Edit: Anything other than a Fiesta as a first car IMO, mine cost £1100 in repairs in the first year of owning it, more than my British sheds have in the 3 years since!

Because you bought a crap one :p

I would strongly recommend a Vauxhall Viva as a first car, speaking from experience. You are unlikely to get into trouble accelerating too quickly. Total babe magnet as well:

Can't go far wrong with a Mk1 Focus 1.6 as a first car. I got my first year of insurance (back in June) for 950 quid at 19 with license for about 7 months and no NCB. It's a nice size too.

Do they not do foci in 1.4 flavour any more? A sixteen is pushing it in terms of insurance surely? For a first car...

Also how the e'll did you manage that for less fan than a grand ¿

My first car was a poxy 8v astra 1.3 and that cost me 800 quid, way back in the 90s lol!
