SILENCE!
Posted this on Retro Rides but there are a few of us on here with old modified motors. Whether you're into green issues or not, like it or not, fuel prices are going up. I've been interested in eco conversions on retro vehicles for some time and have been looking into home electric conversions and even ways to bodge on my own hybrid system so I can roll around town on the electric motor and fire up the engine when I need to get a move on.

Going all electric is dead easy. If you've got space to hide the batteries then there are numerous electric conversions out there and have been since the mid 90's. The advantage of converting an older car is you get the light weight, you use deep draw lead-acid technology which is cheap and plentiful and, even though you have to change the batteries once a year, the running costs are still quite a bit lower than petrol.

The main problem I've had up to now is how to do a hybrid. Most hybrids are FWD and a lot bigger than older cars. To rob all the gubbins from a wrecked Prius, CRZ or gen 2 Insight would be easy enough, but stuffing it all under something like a Nova would just be impossible. And on top of that, a lot of our cars are RWD which pretty much rules out our options.

Until now. BMW are doing a hybrid system in the next generation 1-Series. This is the funny looking little hatch type car, which happens to be RWD. According to these links it'll be hitting the market late 2011 to early 2012:

This is good news for us who want to drop economical motors into our cars. I'm sure it won't be too long before the first wreckers come up for sale, so by 2013 we'll probably have quite a few powerplants in circulation. Those Bimmers aren't the lightest of cars, so if they can do 55mpg combined, when stuffed in a light retro shell they should be able to stretch their legs a lot further.

Here's a bit of Bradley GT electric action:

BMW is a hybridised 8 speed 8HP70 ZF gearbox with a continental 35kW motor and clutch packs either side instead of the torque converter. Lexus stuff has been around long enough!

Its the control which is gonna be the headache but the honda stuff is stupidly simple and compact. We're in CANBUS land :(

What ever happened to just put petrol in a car, its all a bit depressing if you ask me.

That is what you do with a hybrid..

I dont think they do them in good cars yet though, dont get me wrong i'd like to save the planet too, but iv forgotten my point now :)

I don't really know that much about cars but with a company like BMW getting involved maybe one day you'll see the technology in a car you like instead of Japanese family cars.

You don't plug a hybrid in. The clue is in the name - hybrid. Not electric, hybrid.

You always seem to have had a few...

whats a hybrid then?

hybrid is a word that has been around for centuries.

anything derived from heterogeneous sources, or composed of elements of different or incongruous kinds

In this case then it's a car powered by both a petrol engine and an electric motor. You don't need to plug it in.

I like having a drink you like absorbing 1000 pages of info, you got a problem with that?

In fact you should try having a few, save you being so ****ing blunt with everyone, might save you getting a poke in the eye one day too

Basically the fuel you put in is petrol, and it does things with electricity and getting energy from the brakes as well as burning the petrol like in a normal car. It's all wizardry if you ask me.

So what happens if you suddenly need to accelerate, out of a side road for example? Does the electric engine give decent speed?

I always had it in my head that it used electric power at low speeds with the fuel powered engine switched off, and when you gave it the beans/when over a certain speed the fuel powered engine would take over making the electric motor and engine separate from each other (at least in terms of making the car move)?

The Lexus LS600h and Porsche Cayenne Hybrid are decent cars! There not just ecoboxes. Hybrids are like turbos, the manufacturer sizes and tune for the drive characteristics they are after. Old civic hybrid could be a donor, some have stick shift and bigger motor.
