Hey guys, I'm looking into building a desktop rig, and I have seen the microsoft student discount offers where you can get a copy of windows 7 professional for about £40, sweet. being a student, I'd love to take advantage of this. problem is that the offer is only availiable for upgrade copies, and I would be wanting to make a fresh install.

I'm currently using a knackered old laptop that came with vista. Could I connect the laptop hard disc, boot the desktop from it and the copy everything to the desktop's main HDD, and then use the upgrade dvd to install windows 7 on the desktop? As I understand it, you can do a clean install from the upgrade dvd, but you just need a previously installed copy of windows.

it sounds pretty grey to me, but I dont want to pay £60 extra for a full copy if its nto strictly nessescary.

Or if you are at university and are enrolled in a technology / engineering / etc.. contact the tech department to set up msdnaa access where you will be able to get windows 7 for free.

Only if your uni has MSDNAA account, our uni didn't sadly, but my friends uni did ^^
