But seriously if I was personally looking into buying an S2K (probably in a about 3months time  ) I'd look to spend a wee bit more, I'm only highlighting the fact I didn't know the AP1's had fallen into the <£5K bracket. Yeah £5k might be a lot for a 10-12yr old Honda to some but it's still something I'm gonna consider when I chop my car in!

Perhaps the fact the MK2.5 has a different engine should have been top of your list.......

I did say "I don't think.", I know the later Mk2 has the VVC but I thought it was largely the same design and power. It's not really a selling point is it?

New head / different power band / revs more / different management system / slightly more power.

Much more thrashy engine than the standard 1.8, so yes it is a selling point.

Didn't S-VT actually had 165bhp didn't it? As opposed to pretty much all 1.8 MK2s having 140, or was that just the 2.5 RS? There are too many models - its confusing :(

Stock Mk2 1.8 has between 132 and 140bhp depending on its age and the new VVT engine had 146bhp, not a big difference in power but making the engine rev to 7.2 / 7.5k iirc made it different to drive.

You must be thinking about the MGF, i think the later engines had miles more power than the 5.

For the 2001 model year, a facelift to the second-generation MX-5 was released. There were some minor exterior changes, with a press-release of July 18, 2000, announcing the changes as "resulting in an even sportier and more forceful look". Some cockpit elements were changed, with the instrument panel gauges receiving a white face and red numbers. The seats were also upgraded, incorporating more support in the side bolsters and taller headrests. Added for top models (designated 'Sport' in the U.K) were 16-inch (410 mm) wheels with 205/45VR16 low-profile tires, larger brakes at the front and rear, additional chassis stiffening braces, a limited slip differential, a 6-speed manual gearbox, and leather heated seats. The upgraded tires and suspension allowed the new model to pull 0.88 g in lateral grip in tests by Car and Driver magazine. The body was strengthened, gaining 16% in bending rigidity and 22% in torsional rigidity. With the minimum of options, the 2001 model weighed 1,065 kg (2,350 lb).
The 1.8 L (110 cu in) BP-Z3 engine was slightly modified and now featured variable valve timing on the intake camshaft. The intake and exhaust system also received a minor upgrade. These modifications resulted in a power output of 107 kW (143 bhp) (Japan and Australia) or 100 kW (130 bhp) (US only). In the United States, Mazda erroneously quoted the power figure for the Japanese and Australian model in early catalogues. Car and Driver magazine and numerous owners confirmed the missing power, and Mazda offered to buy back the 2001 cars due to those misleading power claims. Owners who did not take up the buy back offer were offered an apology and free servicing for the warranty period.

There is no confusion, the MK2.5 RS almost certainly has ~160bhp

No idea what the Mk2.5 RS is wanna point me to one?

The only MK2.5 5 (to my knowledge) which had more than 146bhp out of the factory is the Mazdaspeed tuned one, which features a turbo, was made in small numbers and i don't think came in RHD.

Mine is a JDM 1998 and I have the SVT 146BHP engine connected to the 6 speed box with the LSD "S-Special" Spec. So although the engine was only made avalible on the Mk2.5 in the UK it has been around since the Mk2 started production.

Yes there was an S-Special and an RS-Special, the only difference was the RS had the bodykit (and suspension I think). Mine goes well if you keep the Revs above 4-4.5k noticeably more torque.
