Hey everyone :)

I will be building my first rig soon with a new Hard Drive and OS(Win7). What I want to know is will I be able to plug in my old Hard Drive(with winXP installed) and browse the files on it?

Thanks

sure just have the new hard drive with windows 7 installed in higher priority for boot sequence, than your old hard drive (just plug this into a spare sata port, if your old hard drive is ide then make sure the new mobo has an ide port).

Yep, what motherboard are you looking at getting, as some new ones don't have a IDE connection.

depending how important the info on the old drive is you could get a sata to ide adapter. not sure that OcUK stock them but google should bring up plenty of options think they are about 20-25 quid

As already mentioned you can get IDE to sata converters, will this be a one off use or can you get the data backed up onto discs.

Thanks for the replies.

Well I only want to plug it in copy over at max 50GBs of files give or take and then I dont really care about the old Hard Drive. I will have a look at the Sata to IDE adapters thanks :)

sorry to jump on this thread but is there anyway the new W7 machine would be able to boot from the old hard drive with win xp installed?

tried it recently with a Win XP installed on a drive from another machine and it did'nt want to know :( ... so I would say NOPE

To the OP

Just save your files off to a external drive first and copy over once you are set up on your new OS... it's easier and less hassle. Save the drive for fitting to a external enclosure if you like :)

My old gaming pc doesnt work Essexraptor. Not sure what is wrong with it, get "No signal" when turning on otherwise I would save to external. Think its the mobo or PSU so ill try my new PSU in it once I get all my parts for my new build.

What's the full spec of your old pc.

Have you tried only one memory module or resetting the CMOS or it the case of been there and done that :)

My old PC is a bit of a mystery to me, got it built for me so not sure. My problems started when I was gaming or stressing the PC it would turn off automatically as if being switched off at the plug. And then eventually "No Signal". Tried all the usual suspects for no signal faults but I am almost certain its the PSU or Mobo.

New pc is gonna be great though just need to save till the end of Feb and I can afford it :D

you can get ide to sata converters for around £6 from reputable sellers, just do a google shopping search for "ide to sata" and you will find them :)

Alternatively you could get yourself an IDE caddy, which would allow you to once the files are copied, format the drive, and you'd have yourself a handy external drive then.
