Now then, back ground info.

Im 25 in a couple of days and ive worked for my dad as a plumbing and heating engineer since I left school. Awesome job you might think but anyone who works for family will know its not always easy.

When i started there was an old boy who worked there too and he taught me most of what i know today. He retired about a year ago and since then ive been expected to continue all the installations on my own while my dad does all the servicing, breakdowns and office work (we have a secutary that comes in half a day a week too) I know this is a lot for him to do but thats the way it is.

Thing is my dad hasn't done installation work for years, ive seen the little bit he does do and its shocking. He's also very out of touch on how much is involved and how long the work takes, it takes more than twice as long when there is one person working as compared to two and he's still yet to understand that. Now don't get me wrong, im not work shy and ill put the extra time in to finish a job on time, i rarely take a lunch break let alone have the hour of the day i dont get paid for.

So he's been on a course all week and ive been left to sort out the breakdowns, answering all the messages plus do the work he's booked in, thankfully it wasn't much. But this is where the problem starts, he'll price a job up, tell me what needs to be done and the materials ill need. Ill get everything and get to the job to find most of what he's said is wrong, what he's said needs replacing wont and it'll be something else. Say if im moving a rad and he's said ill need 2 lengths of pipe and a rad of whatever size, the rad wont fit or will be completely different to what the customer wants and they'll want it moving the other side of the room! So im left with a job he thinks should take half a day that will take more, a rad that dosen't fit and no where near enough pipe!!

Now ive had a week of jobs like this and it all came to head this morning and without going into too much detail I gave him my keys and walked out, only then did I realise I lived so far away from work, that was a good walk!!!
Ive just heard from him and im going in next week to do the work thats booked in but he's asked me to think about what i want to do.

Now as ive said im 25 and its been 8 odd years since I started and I feel a haven't really moved on in my job, its been 3 years since I had a pay rise and although the money is good I think a rise is overdue. All my gas qualifications are through the company so if I walk then ive basically lost them, all the kit is the companies too, im basically screwed for setting up on my own.

So the big question is do I go in on monday and tell him all the problems I have (I do tell him regularly but they never seem to be heard) or do I start looking at doing something else?

Mostly I enjoy my job but there is a lot of things that go wrong because of the lack of planning and the fact im not given enough time to do things right. I get it in the neck off the customer because the job has ran over and i get it in the neck off my dad because im taking too long! Its a good job I don't get stressed over things else id always be stressed.

I left school with crap GCSE's and all ive ever done is plumbing, other than working for myself im not sure what else id go in to.

Sorry for the mega long post but id like to hear your opinions.

:)

If you are a qualified plumber then you will have no problem finding another job. I suspect ti will be the same problems though, better off talking to your Dad and sorting it out tbh.

Tell him your concerns and see if he will allow to work autonomously within the company more.

His qualifications are through the comapny. He leaves his not qualified..

Are the qualifications normally tied to the company?

The company paid for them and im registered as working for the company, if id have paid for the courses and registered myself rather than being added to the companies registration then id still be able to use them if I leave.

My plumbing certificates are mine even though the company paid for them, it just the Gas Safe which is the bit id need really.

Castiel, he's told me loads of times he'll get me working in the office more to take some of the pressure of him, its never happened yet though. If i get an afternoon free ill be sweeping the yard or something like that.

Try and sort it with your dad. Its not a brill time to start a new business, the building industry and struggiling atm.

Good luck !

What his Gas qualifications should be in his name, not the companies. He should be the registered person, otherwise anyone can work for a company and install Gas equipment as long as the company hold a qualification.

That can't be right.

I'm thinking the same as you but if the lad says so...

(I would never have done this, dads company or not)

Get you Gas Safe certificate registered to yourself to begin with, then go out on your own.

You want a payrise

Look around you, people are losing there jobs

They certainly are and im in no position financially to walk clean away.

However, have you been down your local trade plumbing branch, around here its packed most mornings and there's always someone in there any time of day you go in.

Us plumbers haven't seen the recession as such, just the work has changed.

How about you take on a more consultant role then, work with your dad to improve the operations of the company, therefore making it more profitable and rewarding for both of you guys, presumably it's ok money? Therefore it's in both your interests if you are looking to take it over at some point.

Unless you do want to go out on your own, do you honestly think anyone else you work for will not be the same or even worse than your Dad?

You think another Boss won't send you out with the wrong stuff/wrong info? Won't (More than..) whine about how long you take to do any job, at least with your Dad you will have some slight leverage another Boss won't care and get rid of you, not sure what planet you're on if you think your own Dad is the only useless Boss out there... There's bloody millions of them! :D

I still needed to do the course's and pass the exams.

It works a weird way, you pass the exams for the appliance you want to work on the you have to register this with Gas Safe, if you're not registered then you cant work.

It is possibly right that I could register under my own name and be qualified but we're talking in the hundreds to add your name to the register.

Ive just checked and i need to go on a refresher course at the on March.

Why do people always come out with this crap. Not every industry or profession is in freefall.

A british gas service tech told me only last month that although lots of people are holding out for redundancy they have zero chance because they can't employ enough techs for the servicing work they have.

If there is still a huge demand for these qualifications and skill sets it doesn't matter that civil servants are getting the boot.
