I had planned to by an iphone 4 as i have a 4th Gen 64Gb iTouch and wanted to merge the uses of the two and sell the itouch.

I love using the ipod touch and would happily keep it.

What I can't stand the thought of is the actual cost of an iphone4 and a 2 year contract.

So.. very tempted on the Samsung Omnia 7 but don't know anyone that has one to see it in action. Also sceptical as it's 1st generation win7 and got bitten last time jumping in to early on the android market.

My HTC G2 Hero has put me off the Android platform as whilst it's ultimately customisable i feel it has too many loose ends.

Any other phone i should be considering? Needs to be on T-Mobile as i'm on "friends and family" so get some cracking deals.

Omnia 7 is the current pick of the UK WP7 devices IMO.

It is not really first gen, its a whole new OS yes, but with the lessons from YEARS of mobile development. Remember, whilst WP7 is very different and infinitely better than WinMo, there have been a lot of lessons learned over with the older OS.

New update is due in days, and less than 3 months since UK launch. Thats a very responsive development to customer needs. MS have also kept hold of the OS, by stopped providers customising the phone, having stringent handset specifications and allowing regular updates direct from MS. So the OS should have a decent shelf life, and not become fragmented.

I have an Omnia7, and do not regret it one bit. Its a fantastic user-friendly and slick device. Pop into an Orange shop, and get the guys there to show you the thing, and get hands on :)

very tempted for the omnia 7. looked on youtube and it looks like a very polished OS.

Other OS reviews seems very positive.

I just didn't want to carry two devices. But may be persuaded.

Yup, the only downside to the Omnia7 is the lack of expandable memory, but if you going to be carrying around two devices, its not so much of an issue.

I use the 8 gig internal memory (which is on the preferable Nand rather than SD on the Omnia) with the Zune software to keep my device synced with selected music rather than my whole library. Which is not really hard to do. Plus, the ability to listen to most tracks in Zune without buying them is great, so you can listen to and download to your library wherever you are on the phone itself.

Loving my Omnia 7 hasn't missed a beat had it 1-2 months now and loving it still, everything works as it should and no issues yet for me, my only gripe is the hd recording is poor as that's something I do use.

Only issue you may have with the Omnia 7 is the lack of space compared to your Touch Otherwise go for it, or wait until Mobile congress happens in a few weeks (or whenever).

i've got to wait until the 20th anyway as apparently my upgrade is not due until then.

I need to it do a few thing

Synch and play podcasts and a small MP3 collection
view my pop3 email and MSN hotmail at the same time
Facebook
phone
text messages
battery life to last a day

All are fine on the Omnia7 :)

actually quite tempted to get one of these for my missus now.

she has a hosted exchange account and the key thing she uses is the calendar.

she is a chiropodist and keeping on top of her appointments are the one and only thing that seperated her from a filofax.

going to take some convincing to move her from her iphone though

she's also due for renewal this month :)

is it any good?

just found this link

the calendar looks very dark. is it possible to change the theme so it's black text on a white background?

this could be a show stopper for the missus as the calendar is the key function she uses other than the phone

Yeah, can change it to a white background and black text, it's what I'm using on mine.

Ok. Today is the day I can upgrade.

Been offered the Omnia 7 for £9.99 for the device over a 24 month contract or pay £109 for18 months.

This is on T mobile friends and family. Tariff is £3 a month cheaper on 24 month.

I hate the thought of being tied in for 24 months to a particular device.

Going to pop into the store today for a demo.

A fortnight is a long time in the mobile world.

Is there something new on the scene - or the omnia 7 still a safe purchase.

Part tempted with the IP4 still....will much rely on the demo

be intresting to see what you go for :)

Im in 2 minds over the omnia 7 and the hd7,

with an iphone (pfft) as a back up lol

choices...choices. I get quite excited by these things and the Omnia seems a safe bet based on these forums.

I guess i need to see one to decide.

i had a quick play on the hd7 and liked it, battery is putting me off though.

the omnia 7 is prolly the better choice, but 8gb storage space is off putting for me, i prolly wont fill it up at all, but there is always a chance.

like you, decisions decisions lol

At what price a month and what does it include? Just seems quite expensive looking at the stuff you wrote (although probably not).

I got 500 texts/mins and data for £30 a month with a free Omnia 7 on an 18 month contract (not including cashback) so unless you're paying £15 a month on the 18 month contract (or have thousands of texts/mins) then paying over £100 for the phone seems expensive.

i picked it up for £10.

Pay £17/month for 24 month contract. I get something like £250 credit to spend on calls/texts per month on whatever i want. Means i can call internatiaonal numbers or whatever and not worry.

never ever used it up and gives me peace of mind

i grabbed the phone and plugged the sim in. my brother in law hijacked it and installed an app before i got a chance. then my 5 year old daughter got her grubby hands and trialled a butterfly games.

so far had about 7 or 8 minutes hands on and like the look and feel of it.

very sleek interface. device is a nice size and build quality.

need to get a screen protector and case before i break it.

Does everyone use Zune on their Omnia 7 to sync mp3's ?

I can't find a way in the stupid software to add some local MP3 files, but then again it's that naff I've just got easily frustrated and closed it down :p

Any other applications you can use to sync, or are you restricted to Zune?

Ahhh! Makes sense, half price contract but same price for the phone?

I use Zune yeah but just point the program to the folder the mp3s are saved in and it will automatically add them to its catalogue.

Only think i can think of if that doesn't work is that the mp3s are slightly odd (file format), it seems to be a bit picky on what AVIs it catalogues and what it doesn't so maybe thats what happens with music as well?

You can enable drag and drop on WP7, just need to do a quick registry tweak on your computer to allow it (something like changing a specific value from 0 to 1).
