How are the 69xx overclocking?

Do you think that someone who wants a quiet system will be happy running at 48% fan speed?. What do you think of your card at this fan speed?.
im only pointing out what my card does... it doesn't mean if the OP gets a 6950 he needs to up the fan to overclock...

every card is different, it's like cpu's when overclocking...

my card has a heat bug i think.

Yes I know you were only pointing out what your card does Gareth lol :D. I was asking you a question though about if you enjoyed a silent system would 48% fan speed bother you?.

This heat bug thing, sounds very weird. I thought for a little while I had that but really it was unstable. Maybe try a little extra voltage. Mine is very nearly stable at 975Mhz with 1.175v. I need 1.225v for 1000Mhz core so I think a little bump up to 1.190 or 1.200 should get me my 975Mhz stable. With 970Mhz core I was hitting 71'C @ 55% fan speed. A little bit noisy though :(.

Try a little bump up in voltage to 1.200 Gareth and see if your card still freezes/crashes at 62'C. I think it's instability personally but I'm probably wrong. :)

Randomly good sampled cards can do over 1000Mhz with a cooling and voltage mod. But for the average sample with stock cooling expect 900-950Mhz tops if that.

My 6970 will happily do 950/1450 on stock volts @ 40% fan and will top out at 90c after an hour looping Heaven.

I have benched it at 1000/1500 with stock volts @ 55% fan and it topped out at 92c after an hour of looping Heaven.

Playing Metro and Stalker COP (Fantastic BTW!) for a couple of hours on stock settings with 35% fan and it will maybe hit 85c and normally sit around 77c.

Same games with 950/1450 stock voltage and 40% fan and it will hit 90c and normally sit around 85-86c.

I really think it is cooling holding me back more than anything. I would crank up the voltages if I diddnt have broken eardrums from trying to run the stock fan at anything over 50%.

Reckon there is more in this card but would need to purchase a 3rd party cooler Accellero or W/C to go any higher. Gonna try applying some better TIM see if i can drop the temps a little and go higher with 50% fan speed which is JUST bearable in my Fractal R2.

All in all im happy i went 6970 instead of 6950.

nope at 48% i would say it's fine.

if u want it totally slent then he should watercool it......

with air cooling there'll always gonna be some noise

Is it me or does any one find that a little odd? 1000 core on stock with ref cooler

might be a good card :)

mine wont see past 950 on stock volts. small increase in volts lets me push 965/1575 i reckon with better cooling and more volts i could push 1000/1600 :)

Wow, many replies.

So the 6950/6970 thing is a little like the old 5850 vs 5870 argument in that while a 6950 will unlock to a 6970, it won't go as far - is the general consensus.

And while you get pump noise with watercooling, it's not exactly loud - you'd be more bothered by your own breathing.

Now, which is more worth it, a MSI 6950 at £227 posted or a MSI 6970 at £268 posted? I know there are slightly cheaper 6950s to be had, but the MSI is the cheapest from a brand with a decent RMA base/process.

Guys, I've gone back to the stock 6970 speeds after noticing the temps, and it's still idling stupidly high, 69 degrees =\. Fan is set to 29%, I've occupied all my fan slots in the phantom (although they are at minimum), and gpu usage is at dead zero. Now, I have two 1080p monitors, but this shouldn't be an issue as they obviously arent loading the card. Any ideas guys?

Thanks :)

unplug the second monitor and watch the temps plummet

known issue :)

funnily enough maybe its my imagination but since going from 10.12 to the 11.1 betas i've noticed my card idling a good 6/7 degrees lower than previously

Diddnt say it was stable. It will bench Heaven and 3D Mark 11 but craps out trying to play for prolonged periods of time trying to play games.

Im gonna get some ear plugs and see if i can get it stable with a slight voltage bump but i reckon the temps will spiral out of control quickly.

Happy enough for no with it sitting at 950/1450 stock voltages thought it eats pretty much everything i throw at it. :)

Edit: Thinking about it i dunno if Heaven is throttling the card as it will happily pass 1 hr looping heaven but Metro for instance will last 1-10 mins before it BSOD with 1000/1500 stock volts.

Worked like a charm, just unplugged and gpu temp is still dropping, just passed 53 degrees :D

Bit annoying though, as I would like two monitors without stupid temps, anyone know if AMD are gonna fix this? Thanks ;)

Ed: still dropping, just passed 47 =O now just about as cool as my heavily overclocked his 5850

Just thinking guys...

Could I edit the bios in RBE to change the powerplay settings? Like for instance change all of the 2d settings to the lowest clock, so it doesn't heat up the card some when using two screens?

Cheers guys ;)

Its not a bug that how they work with dual screens my 5870 xfire was the same. The raised 500mhz idle clock is so the second screen does not jitter as did with early 5870 drivers.

see my post above my 6970 is idling a good bit cooler on the 11.1 drivers than the 10.12a's i was running previously sitting at least 6/7 degrees cooler

edit actually more like 8 cooler :)

FYI, Nvidia cards are the same :)

Cheers guys :)

Shame really, I like two screens but I don't like my card idling at 30-40 degrees higher than using a single screen =\ at least the load temps aren't ridiculous :)

I'm gonna see what I can do in the bios ;)
