that's the entire point of the flares though, otherwise it would be pointless to even try to use helicopters.

You need to work in pairs, once trace then try to lock on, they smoke second guy traces , first guy locks on an shoots down.

So basically it's a complete lack of team work?, the fustrations are not because of the blackhawk spam killing it's because nobody else is firing on a locked on/tagged heli and thus it's me going solo?

yep the smoke recharges in something like 8-10 secponds you an do it your self but trace >rpg out >them smoke>reload trace>fire trace >lock on.

is too slow.

But 2 people can do it very quickly.

Try using the squad voice chat to tell a squad mate to trace.

Or learn to shoot them down with the guided at4 rocket, it does the most dmg against tanks too.

When flying heli is it possible to dodge locked on missiles? I've tried using smoke and seems to do bugger all.

SVU hip fire is hilarious

smoke needs to be fired before they fire the missile other wise it does jack.

But if you're good (and a million times more lucky :p) you can get behind a building/clif etc to make the rocket hit that.

although every time i've tried i've crashed into said cliff :p

we found out sometimes a BH with armour will survive a Gustav/rpg, but not sure if that's because it had no mrk2.

Or my preferred method

*watch the at4 sail into the pilots face*

"thank you dear" :p

At4 is for girls *sniggers at rifleman*, Laser guided ptftftftftftft :o

This but to be honest if ur persistent most pilots dont realise smoke recharges so quickly and u can get them on the second tracer hit. One piece of advice, the second u fire the dart switch to rocket without reloading and start readying the lock, I am amazed at the number of pilots who dont smoke on time.

Smoke to remove tracers is essential tho as otherwise there would be no flying at all! Note also that Assault underbarrel smoke launchers work to remove tracers from vehicles etc.

Two of the most satisfying things in the game: long-range or fast moving heli tracer, or my personal favourite, tracering a medic who is spamming bullets at you from a distance, then watch him running around panicking as he waits for his fiery death from above :D (only time the carl gustav is acceptable IMO!)

Hmm on atacama getting behind cover will be hard.

Guess it means its harder for helis to rape entire map then.

You have to remember that the smoke perk was added to the choppers after many complaints about it being far to easy to down a chopper, once you were locked on with a trace dart you were dead. At least with the smoke you stand a fighting chance (if you have it enabled and are quick enough!). You definately have to work as a team to take them down now which I quite like.

Some tips for budding pilots.

1. RPGs turn slower in the air so it is possible that if you do an emergency landing that the rocket will hit the ground rather than you.
2. CGs turn faster are are more difficult to evade in the air, if you've not got smoke or have used it but they've locked on - your only hope if to get behind a building/wall/tree and cross your fingers (or bail :D)
3. AT4s are guided manually by the operator so flying in straight lines will get you killed. You often don't get a warning in the cockpit as well which makes it tricky. Your only hope is really to fly fast and low. If you see a rocket coming kill the operator before inpact and the rocket will splash down somewhere else.
4. Untraced RPGs/CGs - you have no hope really other than to try and keep your flight pattern random in terms of turning circles, height and speed. Try and keep high so it's more difficult for them to blind fire you.

The problem is, the majority of players won't adapt to a situation, for example; I logged onto a server last night, and the enemy had all the flags and a tank that was camping the flag nearest to our base. There were more Medics, Assault and Snipers [who were just right at the back sniping] than there was Engineers, now, in that situation when the enemy is basically on your doorstep, you need a couple of Engineers to get to a vantage point and take out the tank so you can progress forward, otherwise you'll be pinned at your base complaining about base raping when it's clearly your own fault for not changing to a suitable class to get out of that situation.

The lack of people adapting in this game really does show sometimes, i also had a medic last night crouching behind a crate on Oasis with his defibs out and not moving when there were plenty of people needing a rez, i ended up reviving around 4 and then dieing, two managed to get behind cover.

I thought RPGs turned faster than CG but CG had higher splash whereas RPG has most penetration out of the two?

No CG is much faster and more agile but having used many RPGs to down choppers they do work even if the chopper is flying faster than the RPG it will catch up, and i have seen my locked on RPGs do full circles to find the chopper :D

Might try some AT4ing next time i'm on but really cant see any benefit over the tracer rocket combo as the AT4 does no extra damage and is pretty slow too.

AT4 isn't that slow really and it means you don't have to waste your pistol on tracers, and smoke can't counter it.

Hmmm tried to come back to this today after a good several months away. Couldn't find any servers so used the updater only for it to keep crashing after about 20 mins.....

Love it when you're inside a building with a load of enemies and you kill a few, jump out the window, go back in and kill them again, so funny, especially when your kill cam has one of them repeatedly shooting your corpse.

i was just playing on a noob server as im only ranked 2 at the mo :D and there were some rank 50 idiots playing really dont see the point why some people would wanna do it typical yanks i guess
