Gutted

Just took more pics will upload soon but looking at the socket frame i can see why board was damaged because when socket is locked there is only a quarter inch of space no where near enough room for a cpu to fit. I will be vindicated on this because OCUK will see the socket space between cpu and pins for themselves.

quarter inch is more than enough, thats 6mm, the cpu isnt that thick

Dude there is no paste in socket ffs OCUK will see that for themselves i no what happened i am not elaborating further let OCUK see the damaged socket for themselves.
I hope something similar does not happen to you after spending 374 quid!

That's a weird one, the damage should be in a regular pattern if there was a fault in the retaining arm/fixings, but frankly, that's too much damage just to be a slip in installation either.

I must say that I (like probably many others) just installed my new Sandy Bridge CPU with impunity! I chucked that little cap, lined up the CPU and cranked the retaining arm in one fell swoop, if I had any ideas that a slightly wonky fit could cause pin damage I would have probably been a lot more cautious, and probably increased my chances of causing similar damage!

At the very least get the motherboard returned under RMA to get the thing back to ASUS. While from the pictures it cannot really be said if the CPU socket was defective, ASUS would be able to test it to see if there was an issue there or not.

you have messed up plain and simple, and now your trying to get a refund but you went about it the wrong way. there is ways you would have got away with it but now it's too late. i dont really give a dam what happens but there is only one way that damage happened and it started with the finger

Bad luck there mate, I did read in a review of that board that the leaver required a lot of pressure to close. I stopped when closing mine because it was so stiff, that board went back anyway and purchased a different one, the Asrock board's leaver was much easier to lock into position.

Asus are strict as **** when it comes to socket damage - they will reject it, your best bet is with whoever the retailer is you bought it off and they will probally reject it.

Like I said you can state the sales of goods act - it's upto the retailer to prove that the damage happend prior to you using it within the first 6 months of purchase.

Another step would be to contact consumer direct and they will probally ask if you purchased via Visa - if you did you can claim back the full amount within 12 months under the condition it was not fit for purpose.
