Hi guys, out of a 2001/2002 Golf MK4 or 2001 Audi A3 which would you choose and why?

Are they pretty much identical in quality and running costs?
Not decided on which model yet - but have been looking for a 1.8T.

Edit: also looking at VW Bora and Seat Leon - although there don't seem to be as many about

Any help would be appreciated.
Looking for a decent hatch approx 1.8 engine due to insurance reasons - this i the most I am willing to go to! (approx group 14-15 in the old scale)
Anything over 150 Bhp is too much

Thanks

not really much to choose between the two, get insurance quotes though because from memory the audi was about £100 more to insure for me.

the a3 is a fair bit lighter than the golf, iirc about 100kg. the a3 seemed to cost extra for the effectively the same car, so i went for the golf

Not many Leons about?!
What's your budget, there are loads in the UK!

And I'd take a Cupra 180 over a Golf/A3

leon insurance is even higher. i think that was on par with the S4 when we were considering one of those. the interior did feel a little lower rent compared to the a3/golf, but we only tried two and one was quite extensively modified.

1.8t sludge (burnt on oil issue) effects the later cars from the examples ive seen. 2000 cars are a bit hit and miss with the issue. look at the service book and see if it was on 10k service intervals or 20k. the 20k long life crap is what kills them.

the oldest engines are AGU, the ones ive those have opened up are very clean in terms of burnt oil and clogged oil pump. aum and later ones are awful, if you get a later engine then i really urge you to do that as a first stop

The Leon is:

a) horrific at the back
b) a hatchback
c) Isnt as well spec'd
The Toledo is much uglier than the Leon at the back, and has broadly the same spec as the Leon..

Each to their own. The back isn't great but better than the Toledo imo. Hatchback is useful; the Toledo isn't exactly a motoway mile-muncher. Fair point on the spec though.

What's your budget and why those cars in particular?

budget is around £2000-£2500

just like the look of the VW/SEAT/AUDI hatches over the stuff in this price range.

want something that feels a bit more special over a bottom of the range 97 Megane!

Fox - I have not really looked at the Toeldos - not many for sale, will took a look tough. Thanks

Either/or, whichever is in the best condition, had the most work done such as suspension bushes, wiper motors, window regulators, cambelt/waterpump etc.. and working door modules! lol, essentially the same car so... whichever you like the look of or whichever is best value.

A bit of a checklist I made to prompt me when viewing Golfs when I bought mine: http://www.illusional.co.uk/stuff/golfguide.doc

and all so easy to live with and work on.

i put bigger brakes on mine today. 312mm up from 288mm. originals worked fine but it was time to change them and its the simplest upgrade

£20 new carriers from breaker
£75 new 312mm discs and pagid pads from ECP

The Toledo is much uglier than the Leon at the back, and has broadly the same spec as the Leon..

Looks are subjective, there are many more higher spec Toledos around - including engines and trim levels which didnt exist with the Leon.

I cant see the point in the toledo at all.

Its a hatchback type of car, ie, pretty pants. Yet has the same practicality as a proper saloon, ie, very little.

Great. They are cheap because nobody wants one, for good reason.

Get loads more for your money with a Bora. Personally an A3 would be my choice, they seem to have kept their image better and not dated as much, and look sportier and have a nicer interior - less family like.

Guess it's down to personal choice at the end of the day
