Gillette really do make the bloody best razors

I've always used Gillette and not had any issues, but perhaps because I've not tried anything else I'm missing out? Problem is I also shave my head, so need something that I can use there as well.

Gillette Fusion, three blades per month at £2 per blade = £72 per year

Astra DE blades , two blades per week at £0.11 per blade = £11.22 per year

Why am I the only one who uses a Merkur 39C instead of the 34C? :D.

I find the blades (I use Derby's) stay sharper for much longer than disposables too, shaving with a blunt DE isn't as painful as a blunt disposable.

I also like Gillette, specifically M3 Power blades. Very quick and easy in the mornings.

Amazed that anyone thinks ten minutes extra in bed is better spent shaving with some 'manly' safety razor.

Why do people keep saying the best razor is this Meuker thing?

Surely it is just the holder for a blade? What blades do you buy? most high street shops will only sell Wilkinson sword replacement blades.

Because with double edge shaving it's the weight of the razor that does the work, not pressing down as with as with modern 'shaving systems'. DE razors come in different weights and length of handle which make a difference.

To be honest, I've used the safety razors with the badger brush and all that stuff. I could never perfect the decent foam method, even after watching several videos on technique. I've tried using the Merkur with foam in a can and Merkur with soap, the Merkur seemed to pull rather than cut smoothly, especially after leaving my face for a few days. I can never shave my chin or neck properly with them too. No expense was spared by the way. I spent £20 on the badger brush, got the popular Merkur and bought some of the best blades.

For ease of use, time and the fact that I can shave closer with the Gillette I will continue to pay for the overpriced blades. I seriously can't be arsed to send 20 mins shaving in the morning!

Yeah, obviously my technique sucks.

Gillette all the way. Its quick and it works. Not sure about all these that seem to derive sezual pleasure out of long, slow man shaving.

This is why I come here.

Obviously the perfect shave the OP gets from a Gillette is complete crap and he's been acting on misinformation.

He needs a MERKUR 34C

because... because! He needs to get one!

Don't forget the badger brush. Synthetic shaving brushes do not correctly distribute the foam from your shaving soap across your face. WAIT WAIT WAIT

YOU WERE USING SHAVING FOAM OUT OF A TIN?

You poor misguided soul. You've probably caught cancer from that.

If you act quickly there may still be time.

And while you're at it, look up how to cook steak properly, you *****

Haha.... I know funny and THAT was a funny post.

:D

Depends - I don't shave every day so I take the extra time when I do and its not much hassle. As it's usually in the evening it's not a factor.

I can imagine everyday it's time consuming, but that would be traded off by the closer shave and less irritation for myself - others may not have the irritation from disposables.

Varies for everyone I guess. For me at 1-3 shaves per week the DE safety razor and the derby or generic Israeli blades give me the best overall shave and costs far less.

I can't believe how mental everyone is - can we at least agree that Merkur make the best stick that holds a blade.

They don't make razors! It's just a blinking stick and when you think of it like that it's much more expensive than Gillette, Wilkinson Sword etc.

By the sound of it Derby blades are what you should all be jizzing over!

Gilette disposables. Cheap as chips, unpretentious, quick, easy and do the bloody job. All this jizzing over a bloody razor is quite hilarious.

I dumped the multblades last week for a new Merkur and brush for lathering up and get the best shaves of my life with very few nicks and cuts.

I'd rather one that gives you NO cuts or nicks...which the Gilette disposables do...unless you're a complete moron.

I use a Wilkinson Sword Hydro 3, for the price it was i can't complain. Very comfortable, and it gets the job done. Use it every two or three days and i haven't had to replace the blade yet, had it for over a month already.

Treated myself to one of these for xmas

With strop, fancy soap and brush to go with it.

Whilst I could shave more quickly with a regular razor,it feels more special to use a straight.Learning how to use it properly and how to maintain it is enjoyable for me.

Does it shave closer than a cartridge style razor ? Probably not in my hands at the moment.I can't even justify my purchase by saying it'll prove cheaper in the long run as the whole lot cost a small fortune.I love using it though, and that's all that counts :D

Since when is shaving enjoyable?

Hair grows out the side of our face and shaving them off is just a bloody chore.

The idea I get is that Merkur + DE razors are enjoyable but they take time to perfect that close shave. Even when you do achieve that perfect shave it isn't going to be done in less than 3 minutes which a disposable razor can achieve with no blood loss.

For me Gillette works. I wet shave with a razor twice a week and in between use an electric shaver.

It is all horses for courses.

If you are burning through many Gillette heads every month then you are going about it the wrong way.

With my method above I don't mind spending £6 a month on Gillette blades they are quick and easy leaving me with a shave which is close and they never ever cuts me.

The route of wet disposable razor combined with electric shaver can be good.

tbh i've always considered gettin a straight cut-throat,
it's kinda like using a gold spanner on your car tho i guess, the gold been soft metal won't do much towards the job but you look fancy using 1 hehe

Time to give my 2p worth. I have tried every type of razor since I started shaving when I was 13 years old 17 years ago. Electric, DE blades, Wilkinson sword, Gillette even crappy Bic disposable ones.

One thing I look out for is if I can shave upwards (against the grain so to speak) with any one razor. The ONLY razor that allows me to do this without getting the slightest rash, irritation or cuts is the Gillette Fusion. This razor gives me the smoothest and most comfortable shave out of all of them. I have tried the Merkur a few years back and I gave me a rash. So that was a no no. The Fusion blades last a long time too. I have to shave everyday for work apart from my days off. I do the usual, wash face in HOT water and apply my gel. After EVERY stroke with the razor it gets splashed in the sink full of water to remove and hair and keep it clean. This, after many years of trial and error is the best shave I can get.
