I thought others might be interested in seeing this:

live coverage of the million man march, they have apparently reached their target and looking at the live streams it certainly looks that way. Absolutely stunning to see so many people gathered to kick out a brutal leader in a country where a week ago a gathering of more than a few hundred protestors couldn't have been imagined.

Wasn't the Million Man March done in 95, in Washington?

/edit what's this one about?

Been away from the TV for the last week? :D

Tunisia revolted, overthrowing their leader. This has triggered similar revolts in other dictatorships throughout the middle east none more so than Egypt where for the past 30 years any protest has been squashed with brutal force by the police. This time though too many people came out on the streets, last Friday the police retreated and since then the amount of people on the streets of Cairo and other major Egyptian cities has been growing. For the past few days they have been calling for a "Million man march" today. Many didn't think that many people would be able to make it as phone lines, internet, trains and other public transport and communications have all been shut down in an attempt to prevent it.

Now though it's clear that close to a million atleast have made it into Cairo and they will soon be taking over the government. The army have already said they will not attack civilians.

I wonder how it works, i mean, who takes over from the civilians that are there till its all sorted and a new person is elected.

What is the process of 'overthrowing the government'?
Is it just 'oh look there's a million people outside my window, I should probably stop being the leader and step down'?
Or do they all march in there and kick him out?

anyone else watch that link and constantly expect someone to blow themselves up in the middle of everyone?

hope it doesnt happen but it's the kind of disgusting thing that seems to happen these days :(

I'm a little concerned that the current corupt, but generally moderate, regime is gonna be kicked out for a more extremist muslim one :S

Ideally the former, usually the latter.

In Russia's recent example (Yeltzin et al) the army turned their own tanks against the government and literally shelled them out of the building.

Egypt has since cut off the internet in the country and text messaging services have been disrupted.
Google announced late on Monday that it was operating a special service to allow people in Egypt to send Twitter messages by dialling a phone number and leaving a voicemail.

I think it is great that Google have done this. Companies like Vodafone (and others) switched off the Internet at request of the Egyptian government and they complied without batting an eyelid despite the obvious need for citizens to get their unbiased stories across.

Anyway hopefully the current Government gets the message and steps down and is replaced by a decent democratic government.

I was surprised at this, I was on the phone to Vodafone about something yesterday with work and was told that their technical tema were otherwise engaged at the moment sorting some stuff out in Egypt..

Right so when do we start it on our government. No more labour, conservative etc and find somit new instead of switching between crap parties all the frelling time?

Anyone up for poping to downing street to get a new government system? :D
