I subscribed to xbox live via the xbox live website, and it says auto renewal is turned on, how do I turn it off? Can't find the button anywhere on the website.

You can't. You have to call up Microsoft and ask them too. I know. 'Tis annoying.

Back in the day when I played loads of Halo 2 online, my debit card expired. They didn't just cut my service, but decided to ban my account. I called up and explained that the card had simply expired, and I was told that the account was banned forever. Not deleted, so I could create the same name.. oh no, just locked indefinitely.

So idiotic.

Microsoft only have themselves to blame for that because the whole purpose of forced auto renewal is to cause people to forget so that it re subscribes and they get more $$$.

i recently had a problem with them...my card had expired when they tried to take the auto-renewal, but rather than cancelling or freezing my account they kept it going. I rung upas i wanted to use a prepaid card but they stated i 'owed' them the money for a years subscription as it were over my payment for that year.

nothing i could do about it either :(

Yep, you got to call them up. Long winded too. I did it last year and it took over 10 minutes just to turn off auto renew, something I feel you should be able to do from the console.

I must say the 360 is unintuitive at times, on halo 3 I'm being told I don't have the required maps to play in certain play-lists, yet I can't see any option to download them on the screen?

Yip. You gotta spend half an hour on a phone to them answering questions and justifying why you want to cancel the subscription.

Complete waste of time.

I must say i cancelled my xbox live through the website by clicking on a button halfway through last year

Not that I'm calling you a liar, but I'm pretty sure that's always been the procedure for cancelling. I did it it early 2008 before I moved to Prague then again 3 months ago, and it was exactly the same.

I phoned them up around Xmas time when my Xbox died. The woman at the other end of the line still tried to get me to keep it with offers of discounts etc, but I kept telling her I no longer had an Xbox. It was dead and I wasn't going to get a new one as I was going to get a PS3 this time round.

He's right though, for a period of time they allowed you to cancel online and wound up going back to phoning them. I'd guess that the number of people cancelling took a bit of a jump when it became easier to do so.

Phoning them tomorrow myself, hope it doesnt drag on for as long this time, took me thirtly bloody minutes last time . It really is ridiculous you cant do it online.

Seriously, Microsoft lose a lot of brownie points for that.

They've actually been pretty tolerable in recent years, but this goes to show that they can go back to their old roots when necessary.

Greedy mofos.

Luckily my subscription isn't due for renewal for another 11+ months :)

I had my card expire with this and they tried to get me to update my details for 3 months then they finally stopped I didnt have any trouble saying I owed them subscription. I do remember seeing something about cancelling though this was a looooooooong time ago now so maybe they removed it.

They get you to ring up now because they want to know why you're cancelling and to get you to stay. I lost my rag with the poor Dutch guy on the end of the phone when I rang up because he was trying his best to avoid cancelling my sub. Last time I use my card on Xbox now ever.

Tell em you've swapped Xbox for a PS3 and see what they say. :D

pretty sure that doesnt happen anymore. a friend of mine had his account suspended for the same reason but when he added his new credit card the his account went back to normal.

still though the difficulty in cancelling the auto renew is ridiculous and is the reason I only ever used pre paid cards.

why cant they just have a tick box on the accounts part of the website?
