1680x1050 or 1920x1080?

Hi,
In the market for a new monitor, current one is a 19" 1280x1024 res so obviously looking for something higher res than that and around 22-24". What I really want to know is whether a 1080p monitor is worth getting, there's a sacrifice to be made in terms of fps at higher resolutions but is it worth it for the extra resolution in games i.e. do games look a lot better at 1080p compared to 1680x1050? Graphics card is currently a GTX260 but have pre-ordered the GTX480 :)

1920x1080 is awesome and you won't regret the upgrade.

With a 480 you will be able to max games at that resolution no problem.
 
I'm not so sure it comes down to just a number, take something like the Dell 2209WA (1680x1050) and put it against a mainstream TN monitor @ 1080p and i think the quality of image and colours available would make your choice less obvious than "bigger is better" in terms of resolution, interested to see what more people reckon to this, fair question OP but the answer may not be as simple as you expect.
 
Thanks for the replies , will be interesting to see what people think. If it makes any difference I only sit about 2 ft away from the monitor (if that). One thing I'm wondering about, surely 1920x1080 is too high a resolution for the Windows desktop , icons would be tiny wouldn't they? If you don't have the desktop set to the native res of the panel though you lose a lot of clarify / sharpness I assume. Or is it fine using Windows I.e. not gaming just browsing etc at 1920x1080 res?

Don't worry about that. It took me one day to get used to 23" 1920x1080 after upgrading from 19" 1440x900 and it was one of the best upgrades I have made to date.

I will never go back to anything under 1920x1080 and I have been considering 2560x1600.

I've never found that to be a problem. If you have a 1920 monitor that is 24" I don't think you will have any issues. Nothing looks too small. You would only find that a problem if you were running that resolution on a monitor that was much smaller, say 19". Then everything would be tiny :)
The UI for latter versions of windows is also designed with higher resolutions in mind. Just stick the resolution down to 800x600 and everything is HUGE!
 
Lol I am still on 1024x768 15" monitor:p and that's with a 5850 lol. I will also be hopefully soon upgrading to 1080p 24" monitor. Really eyeing the BX2450 but as people say it is currently over £200:(. So if goes around £200 then I will definitely like to buy it.

Op whenever a choice is given for Full HD, then go for it:).

What model? As the weight of advice on this thread heavily suggests you should go for at least 1920 x 1080 for a 22 inch monitor. Considering you pre-ordered a £200 and very capable graphics card you don't want it wasted on a cheap and relatively low resolution monitor - it's a false economy. There's a Ford Escort near one of my local supermarkets going for £1500. But guess what...

Yeah, don't worry I resisted, is a good price for a 22" LCD TV with freeview and DVD though!
 
1920*x is almost the standard now. But I've got to say 1680*1080 is still very capable and I use it without any regret. Had the choice of upgrading my 22" or a higher resolution but quality was more important so I just got another, giving me more space. For a upgrade in your situation it's better to go for a 1920*x screen if you can get the right panel within budget and your graphics card is up to it, otherwise a lower resolution screen may suit you better.

i had a dell 2209wa and its a great monitor better than the cheaper tn panels by a mile its not all about resolution

I'm using a 2209WA at work and the quality of the panel makes up for lack of a higher res. At home I use a 1920x1080 panel though purely because I like to run my games at the higher res. It is however only a TN panel so not great for angles! Before I upgraded my gfx card I would only use it at 1680x1050 but just turn the AA up a bit.
 
I have the Samsung 233HD amd with it being a 23inch screen, I can't really see much difference... by the way... in order to fit all the pixels on the screen, wouldn't they need to reduced the size of each pixel on this screen?
