Stupid Cyclist

What's interesting to note is that Tute is not only a cycling enthusiast, but also a dedicated commuter cyclist. As such, Tute appreciates the precarious situations that the cyclist must face on the road, especially when confronted with several tonnes of metal, and in some cases, several tonnes of white van man bearing down on him. With this in mind, Tute is not only respectful of other road users, but also courteous.

This wouldn't work with most cyclists as it'd catch them going through red lights, swerving all over the roads, cutting cars up, riding on the pavements, and generally trying as hard as possible to not abide by a single rule of the highway code.

Perhaps if motorists followed the highway code, or for some managed to pull their head out of their bum whilst driving, then cyclists may be more inclined to comply.

I dont tend to have many problems whilst riding as I am generally travelling at an equal or greater speed to the cars due to levels of traffic and make a conscious effort to avoid being bullied at roundabouts etc by riding in a dominant position in the road. This coupled with attempting to predict where the next motorist trying to kill me is coming from seems to be a winning formula.

I don't tend to get annoyed with cyclists when I am driving as I can see the situation from both sides (unless they ride two abreast which is imo retarded). Why the hell not weave through stationary traffic for example, if you are paying attention to the situation there should be no problem its your risk. Would you be annoyed at a filtering motorcycle? A push bike just has more manouvreability.

In closing, I ride however the hell I want at my own risk and don't leave anything to chance in regards to retarded motorists due to them either not seeing you, failing to acknowledge the simple rules of the road or just making silly manouvres. Exactly the same as if you were driving a car!

Eh? I don't cycle i'm afraid. I just hate watching cyclists end up in hospital because they jump red lights (seen that happen), tangle up with OAPs on the pavement (seen that too), and "hop" off the pavement with no warning and without looking, almost under my wheels (almost seen that happen several times).

Perhaps if motorists followed the highway code, or for some managed to pull their head out of their bum whilst driving, then cyclists may be more inclined to comply.

I'm not talking about motorists - i'm talking about cyclists and the dangerous things they do. Is this the only argument cyclists can provide? "Oh well, motorists are dangerous too" - YES, but they have at least a ton of metal to protect them!

When the van first started pulling in, there were cars to the cyclists left, so he had nowhere to go.
I think in this case the cyclist was justified

It's always better when you don't have to bother with a camera at all. I know my household doesn't.)

Precisely. And the fact that this person has had to use a camera to prove his case to the police (I'm assuming you listened to the clip, too?) is exactly the same. Wouldn't it be a wonderful world if nobody got burgled and nobody ever cut a cyclist up?

I don't even see how all the anti-cyclists have an argument when the van driver was convicted...

Thus falling into my intricately laid trap! :D

It's a shame that you don't cycle though, it's a thoroughly enjoyable activity. Despite some of the dubious comments in this thread, the overwhelming majority of road users are sensible, patient and rational and so sharing the road with them is a good experience. That is, provided you are also sensible, patient and rational :)

But there's no reason to be a snob, ignore the van's indicator lights and just out of spite to be "right" stay along side the van when all you had to do in reality was stop being a **** and slow down.
I don't care what vehicle you drive or ride, you don't purposely put yourself in a position to almost have an accident to prove someone wrong. Idiots.

Exactly what I was going to say. Its like he kept up on purpose to provoke an incident. Don't get me wrong the driver is obviously a tard too but personally I'd have just slowed down.

The hatred to cyclists on this forum is quite astonishing.

Is it all just typical keyboard warrior behaviour, or are you actually that deranged??!

Indeed. I've had more problems with pedestrians than drivers. But then I cycle in Bristol which I think as far as average standards go is a relatively good cycling city.

+1. I like how you say road users there instead of singling out motorists or cyclists. I cycle to work and generally encounter issues caused equally by those two groups.

I don't have an argument. I've never tried to claim that motorists are perfect, of course they're not.

But at the same time, what I posted is totally valid.

Trap? You confused me, was that the trap?

I used to, a lot. But then I got old enough to buy a car. No offence to cyclists mind, just not my cuppa. :)

I'm also perfectly happy to share the road with those cyclists who are responsible. I have to admit, driving around cyclists does make me nervous, as there are a large proportion of them who simply act without thinking, and suddenly.

Why are we arguing about the video? The van driver was convicted of dangerous driving, which means that a judge with a lot more experience than any of us believed he was driving dangerously.

Let the driver appeal... He doesn't need us to defend his dangerous driving.

If you add up all the time you have been stuck behind a cyclist, it's probably at least a day. Time stuck there doing nothing while you could be living life.

In other words cyclists have shortened your life by a whole day!! They are slowly KILLING US!

Hmm, how about the time I spend stuck behind cars? Average traffic speed in London is around 12mph, whilst my average speed in London is around 17mph. Bleeding cars, just taking up the whole lane and holding up traffic. Some of them don't even pay road tax, or have insurance........

Every day I see them blocking pavements by parking on them, running red lights (amber gambling, setting off when the lights are still amber, running full reds, stopping in ASLs), speeding and driving with a general lack of consideration for others.

I reckon he was fined under the "due care" part for his slamming on of the brakes.

He was fined for dangerous driving, there was a big thread about this on Bike Radar around three months ago.

Generally, we just need better policing of the roads in the UK for all users, not just concentrating on specific types of users. My bugbear at the moment is motorcyclists using ASLs and dedicated cycle tracks for filtering. Though, as has been mentioned above, iPeds are the worst. My only two offs have been pedestrians stepping out at crossings when the red man was showing. In both cases the pedestrians didn't even both to stop walking as I laid on the ground...

I think cyclists should be made to get a license which gives them just 6 months to use the roads in Britain. This 6 months will give them time to save up and buy a car. Bikes are for Kids - cars are for men. :D

Just to let you know i am riding my bike to get from A-B at the moment while i save for a car.

I'm not sure in what world you think it's logical to keep moving into a path of a much larger object which could almost certainly hurt you.
Yes, the van overtook, this happens in life, deal with it.

Every driver has a duty to drive safely and not harm other road users, be they much larger, faster, better stereo, neon lights. Anything you like.

The rules of the road apply to across the board and the van driver was clearly breaking them. He then decided it would be a good idea to get out and assault him.

The cyclist was doing nothing wrong, deal with it.

I live in Cambridge, there are hundreds of cyclists and the vast majority are perfectly fine. I can’t say the same for the car, van, lorry, bus drivers. And no, I don’t ride a bike.

Probably a judge who does not drive as he is chauffer driven in his bentley to court.

Cyclists do take massive risks i find. Many times i have seen them swerving in and out of traffic,. going through red lights, mounting pavements, riding 2 abreast etc etc. Just asking for trouble me thinks.

Without looking it up, I'm pretty sure that the highway code says that if you're being overtaken then you're supposed to leave room for the overtaking car to get back to the left hand side of the road. This to me means slowing down a bit and definitely not speeding up to get your own back on the person being overtaken. I think the left hand turn is a bit of a red herring, I think the van driver got done for "brake testing" the cyclist later and then getting out and acting like ... a typical van driver.

I have the utmost respect for cyclists on the road, try to give them as much room as possible - the main problem is that the roads in this country aren't set up for it. I was even driving down a nice wide road this morning on my way to work, behold a cyclist in bulge enhancing lycra and a flashing red light - oh can't overtake because the sodding council have put a traffic island in the middle of the road

That said, cyclists could act a bit less anti-socially too, obeying traffic controls such as zebra crossing and traffic lights, oh and if there's a cycle lane - use it. Nothing worse than doing 70 down the dual carriageway, coming up to the flashing red light and having to put the anchors when there's a perfectly good cycle lane not 6 feet away. I know the reason why they don't - because all the crap in the cycle lane will give them a puncture, maybe they should get better tyres?
